My First R came to a sudden end in November of 06. I was driving North on Route 22 in Katonah NY on my way to 684. The roads were wet from a rain the night before and the sun was out. I was humming along, as Il tend to do with an R and I saw the line 4 to 5 cars .
The front was stopped waiting for me to go by to make a left. I was almost past the 3rd car when all I saw was a large white blur. There was no reaction time since what happened was the truck slammed into the vehicle in front of him sending it into the one in front of him totaling the first one.
He them proceeded to careen into my lane in the blink of an eye. I did not have a chance. As my mind remembers it, I was traveling a little faster then the speed limit, clear road, I could see a 1/4 mile ahead of me and I was aware of the stopped traffic. I figure i was about to approach the last car he hit as he came into my lane. I had a stone wall to my right with no escape.
As you can see, it was not pretty. He hit me along my fender aiming right at the A pillar and me. It was a tremendous sound and a very hard hit. I lost the front wheel and managed to come to a stop on the on the right side of the road. The Airbags went off filling the car with smoke and after a second after a series of 4 letter words i had to kick the door open to get out with a cloud of smoke.
My only injury besides my pride was my pinky that hit the window by the burst of the airbag. I was graced, she was not.
Dual air bag deployment, Broken windshield, destroyed wheel and shaft, entire left side from the headlight to the start of the passenger door munched and i am sure some frame damage for good measure.
So, I could not afford to replace her and got a 2007 Audi A4 for 24 Months and know after the first week being unable to blow past a VW I was doomed for a couple of years.
I started looking quite awhile ago and found my new "Beast" in Lancaster PA at Stadel Motors. It was in near mint condition with 22400 miles. I paid for an extended CPO warrantee and she is covered till 2014. So, Long live Volvo and Long live me. Marc
