Time to re-evalulate some postings in here...
When I first started paying attention to this forum about a year ago, it was great. A bunch of R enthusiasts talking about what they have enhanced/want to enhance on their respected car. And at the same time, finding some help with the R's quirks was also readily available.
Lately, I see a lot of comparison of the R to other cars, as if you are disappointed with your purchase. OK, so be it. I didn't think this forum was a place to "size up" or to complain.

Agreed. It is hard enough to keep up with all the posts as it is. A lot of these recent posts are more "Car Lounge" than "R" related. Good point Phuz.

I think that although you do here some people who are mad at their R, or hear people comparing it to a BMW or whatever, there are very few people who really regret their decision.
I think those people who do had different expectations vs. what the car actually was...ie were looking for those magic 0-60 times, looking for it to be an M3 beater, etc. And Volvo is somewhat to fault for that, for although the car is none of those things, it was portrayed as such.
However, if you have more realistic expectations I think you'll be happy. It won't have the handling or steering feel of a BMW. It's not going to out drag an M3 consistently (with mods, maybe). But it's cheaper, has better seats and interior, is 4 doors (or wagon), has AWD, etc.
If you like your T5, you'll love an R. My buddy has two T5's and he loves my R. I have to say that the R is a T5 with the volume turned up to 11, and without torque steer. If you really want a Bimmer and can't afford one, get a CPO Bimmer.
If you love the "Volvoness" of your T5, get the R.
I like the comparo opinion threads. I've learned a lot about what people like/dislike about all sorts of cars from a car enthusiasts point of view. At the end of the day, I still like the R for my reasons. All the rest are just interesting opinions.

Re: This is the "R Forum" & NOTHING else (phuz)

I don't totally disagree, but don't you think that is better than a bunch of R owners patting each other on the back telling each other that their cars are the greatest, and no car can touch it? I do! At least we hear more than one angle in this forum, and though some folks are just out to knock the R, some just see things that the R lovers like myself might miss. Don't get me wrong, we could do without a lot of the R HATING that happens here, because some of it is just senseless, but on average, I am pretty pleased with the balance in the forum. Guys like Zigger will back the R to the death, where as guys like Johann are going to give the R a humility check at the door... both angles are important, I think, and I feel the forum is better like that.
just my 2 c's
-Mike

Many people who frequent car forums (myself included) would seriously benefit from a bit of track education before we go describing the strengths/weaknesses of any car.

Re: This is the "R Forum" & NOTHING else (blackTT55)

To R owners who consider what others think of their car:
Why does ANYONE care what a pack of BMW owners think about a Volvo R?
The only opinion that matters about your vehicle is yours. If you bought it to impress others, then you bought the wrong car. And you'll always be buying the wrong car.
If I wanted a sore rear end every time I traveled any significant distance, I'd have bought an M too. And I'm sure all the M boys could care less about my opinion.
Just why did you buy YOUR R in the first place? Is it performing as you expected it to when you signed the papers? There's the real assessment of this vehicle.
Please, stop being so insecure over what others think. That's why we have red 'vettes and Vipers.
I chuckle every time I see him cruising around town. His "fools no one" comb-over always wofts above the roofline while he's driving. LOL ... as long as HE thinks he looks good in that car.
I don't know if it's the age of my R (two years old now) or this forum, but I'm less and less excited about my car. You might be right about the R-bashing comparisons, but I think it's that I now see my car as a commoner rather than an exclusive model. It's a really good car, not an amazing car. That said, I am still happy with my purchase.
- Tryg
