I have had my R for a little over 3 weeks now, and I play a little but for the most part drive pretty tame. Nonetheless, I have been pulled over by police 2 times.

What makes this Sooo ridiculous is that prior to having this car I had a 2003 Torch Red Mach 1 Mustang. I drove that car like a bat out of hell doing over a 100mph on the regular and was only pulled over 2 times during the 2 years I had the car.

The first time I was pulled over in the R I was going 55 in a 50. The ofc. was in a foul mood...I am sure someone got tagged pretty hard after he found out that he was not giving me a ticket..."professional courtesy".

This morning I was pulled over again doing 50mph in a 35mph. Bottomline, the cops really seem to have their eyes out for this car, and I was under the impression that the R flew under their radar.

I would venture to say that it IS under the radar. You probably just hit the worst luck possible with finding Cops that are in foul moods

The few R owners in SoCal say this car is VERY under the radar. Especially since there are so many rice-rockets running around out here the Cops are too busy with them

i have to agree. my T5 was black and in the 1.5 years I owned it, I was pulled over once, and that was because of outdated inspection stickers when I went past a cop going 10mph and he was parked in the median, so he got a real nice long look at the sticker

definitely UNDER the radar

I've had just the opposite experience. I meet highway patrol cars often and they don't even switch the radar on. They don't even seem to look twice, even when I am 15 to 20 over the limit. It has saved me soooo many times. oclv

Re: This car is a Cop Magnet (esquiR)

It's a VOLVO SEDAN. Unless you've got the sport kit or other exterior mods going, it doesn't look all that different from all the others.

As far as the police are concerned, this car isn't even capable of speeding. Considering who drives 99% of the Volvos on the road, they're right.

And most of the time, they're too shocked to find out you're not a soccer mom or retired philosophy professor to even give you a ticket.

Chalk it up to BAD LUCK. That's something some R owners will attribute to these from time to time.

Ditto - Sometimes, I wonder why I spent the money on a radar detector.

Well I don't have an R but I do agree with you that the CHPs in So Cal are pretty much occuppied with all these ricers. Last thing on their mind is a Volvo http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Re: This car is a Cop Magnet (sgmlaw)

The last time I was pulled over, I used the line: "Officer, I was not speeding or racing around (like he was accusing me of doing), I mean I don't think a Volvo can do that."

He didn't find that very amusing. Gave me a ticket for no signal while merging...

I have a Passion Red with sport kit.

Believe me the Volvo badge is like extra coatings of radar absorbant material on a plane.

Although I'm overdue I've never been stopped in my R.
Further, I recall an incident about two years ago when I was speeing in our XC90 on the CA73 just outside Aliso Viejo. I came upon and passed a red Ferrari. As we crested a hill I found myself staring right at a cop in the median while I was doing about 10 mph faster than the Ferrari. Guess what little red sports car got pulled over?

As I have said.. there's a stigma attached to Volvo that their owners/drivers are middle aged, republican, educated and safe drivers... this is to our advantage, especially for those who don't fit this profile http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Maybe the cops are out to get LAWYERS.

You haven't had to prosecute an IA case lately, have you?

only time i waspulledover in the R is when i was going a little fast in a fairly empty parking lot [35] and blew by a cop that was...i guess...napping in the lot -- just warned me and let me go; otherwise, i'd been pulled over more times in my old '02 S40

Since when? I can't think of a single make of car (in the US) that's more associated with the left side of the political spectrum, even if the modern-day purchasing demographic no longer fits that profile. Except maybe Subaru, which seems to be the current titleholder.

Free-associating the term 'Volvo' still conjures up images of crunchy 50-y.o. ladies in baggy dresses with long gray hair driving faded 240 wagons with NPR on the AM radio on their way to the farmers' market.

No wonder we're safe.

There were numerous intances where I've heard this reference of Volvo drivers being the middle aged, middle income, republican white guy. Several comedians made this comment including Bill Mar. I think this was also mentioned in the movie "The Rock" with Nicholas Cage.

There is no way that Volvos are associated with anything other that hippies and leftist yuppies - at least the various places that I have lived. Birkenstocks and organic produce...

Subaru is associated with rock climbers and lesbians.

Audi is associated with urban gay men.

Republicans drive Suburbans and Dodge trucks.

I swore I heard this comment made about 10+ times. Plus look at all the movies which featured Volvos. Like "The Rock" in this movie he (Nicholas Cage) made this comment "I have a boring life.. I drive a grey Volvo"

Another movie (also with Nicholas Cage) "The Weatherman" he drives an S60 and he's also portrayed as this boring, financial well to do weatherman who's life is in shamble. There are a few more which I can't remember that portrayed the volvo driver as being middle-class conservative (white) individual.
