There was much written a few months back about how hybrids were in general not getting the advertised mileage and were missing by a lot. I also think the payback for the technology is long as well. This will of course shorten as the technology becomes more common and thus the cost to upgrade to a hybrid is less.
My real concern with hybrid technology is that it is relatively new technology and I would be concerned about repair costs down the road. That would make the payback time even longer or take away any benefit whatsoever.
