Re: The shimmy is driving me crazy! (mofolicious)

I just got used to it in my car. And now that I have coilovers on the way I am hoping it won't be that much worse... :crossfinger:

If you dont know you dont have it.
I think that to cure the shimmy we need a stiffer transmount maybe fill it with polyurethane. There was one guy that reported his shimmy was reduced with a new OEM transmount, so filling it with PU should do something

Why would some cars shimmy and others not, unless the shimmying cars have unique problems? How'd your alignments come out after lowering? Mine's smooth as it was before except on crappy roads, bumps/cracks in the road are worse.
I just looked at my alignment report... It says "Symptom: Lowered" on it.

My shimmy is from my wheels i installed which i bet most are probably from as well. I narrow most shimmy complaints to the wheels and tires...

Re: (ForceFed Motorsports)

Mine is from my wheels/tires. I think I even have hubcentric rings, but I am not sure if they used them or if they didn't fit or something...I have a definite shake/shimmy that is annoying, but livable...

Re: (carreragt7)

Mine dont which i expect the problem to be so i tried to tighten the lugs as centered as possible in the air. My shimmy is very light. If i hold the steering wheel tight it doesnt even move. However if i let it go just a slight back and forth, mostly on the freeway only.

Only under load. I suspect it's the driveline angle. I'm pretty low....
I still need to put my winters on and see if it goes away to rule out any possibility that it's from the Pegs.

Re: (mofolicious)

my car only shimmies very rarely when I am accelerating from certain low speeds... it's weird, it doesnt happen all the time, but it never happens at high speeds, turns or ever on the freeway.
its been quite awhile since I've had my alignment done, so I gather that could be contributing to it somehow, i may try to get it done before the seattle gtg, but it's been tolerable.

Re: (kpsingh0)

Sure you dont have brake shudder from warped rotors? As for the acceleration shimmy thats usually due to something rotational like CV joints that are bad or have to much play.

If your steering wheel feels like it's thumping from side to side when you're braking when getting off the highway, it may very well be warped rotors or uneven pad deposits on the rotors. I don't think it's a visible defect, calipers may tell the tale better. Or, replace your front rotors and hope it goes away. Mine did.

Re: (kpsingh0)

Bout the only visible give away of warped rotors is if you had really dark blue hot spots on the rotors. Otherwise they still may be you just might not be able to see it. Doing a run out would tell you for sure.
I think hub centric rings would fix a lot of peoples problems. Id have to measure the inside bore of my wheels but if i remember correctly it would be a wierd size unless someone knows where i can get custom ones made?
