The SADDEST thing happened to me, today...

I hope that someone from Volvo does read most of the posts here because I am very dismayed by what happened today. The summary is as follows:
I am seriously considering to purchase the new "Road holding kit" that Volvo did introduce 6 weeks ago for the new V70s and S60s. This kit did exist for 850s but not for S60s and new V70s.
So, I go to Volvo's network for retailers to get the scoop on the particulars )additional info on it, pics, part numbers, labor times, etc.).
They have a picture of an Ohlins brace (with its 8 settings) and underneath that they tout the new system for the P2 cars. I felt great! I said to myself, "finally"! Anyway, as I was reviewing all the components required for my car (2001 V70 T-5), I noticed that I only needed three parts for the front suspension and the rear adjustable shocks, respectively. The 850s and S/V/C70s needed quite a bit more...So, I had our Parts Manager get on the phone with Volvo's Tech/Part Hotline to find out what the scoop was.
After waiting on the telephone for more than TEN minutes (we had nothign else to do, we eat donuts all day, anyway!), this guy (a Volvo Cars of North America employee...I am mentioning "Volvo employee" because it is significant later on) by the name Freddie answers the call. Well, let me tell you that he acted like he was being disturbed from his donut break (I would think that since we all eat donuts he would be more sympathetic but he was not) and he did not know what the heck we were asking him. He kept asking..."who is this kit from?"...the reply was..."er, Freddie...it is a VOLVO kit"! He was searching for a while and then asking again..."where did you get all this info?"..."er...Freddie???? We got it from VEN (Volvo's network for retailers)...YOU guys put out this info back in December!"...And Freddie, the big and friendly representative of Volvo replied..."I can't believe I have to search all this"! "I hate looking for these things....they are a pain in the a$$"! Here we are...the Parts Manager and myself looking at each other incredulously and mouthing to each other "WTF?" I am barely controllable by this point, while this guy is whining because we did not ask him a simple question like "who makes the oil filter" and I am motioning to him to give me the darn phone so I can tell this guy a few things...HERE IS THE BEST (and FINAL) PART! This guy is still going back and forth with the Parts Manager, who is being very courteous, and when the Parts Manager lets the subject go because this idiot does not know anything significant about the road holding kit, he asks him about the Lowering kit (again, a new kit that just came out for S60s and the new V70s)...and guess what this "proud" Volvo Cars of North America said..." why is this guy asking for all this stuff? Tell him that if he needs a performance car he can go get a... B M W "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can control my temper fairly well but that was it for me! When I heard that (I had my ear next to the Parts Manager's ear), I went ballistic! If it were not for the fact that I was close to the Parts counter where a customer could have heard me, I would have screamed to him stuff that I wold have, later, regretted. I lunged and tried to grab the phone but the Parts Manager knew what i was going to do and reacted faster....he promptly hung up!
Can you imagine this idiot? This is one of the sorriest situations I have ever encountered..."tell him to go get a BMW"....this still echoes in my ears...I have heard that this guy is totally ignorant so that should not have shocked me, anyway...I am telling you one thing: this is not going to end here. I will make sure that certain people at Irvine know about this....how sad...

Yannis

Now maybe you can understand why I have the feelings I have towards Volvo and Volvo employees. Imagine how I felt the first time I called a Volvo dealer as a customer asking these types of questions.

Man...I feel sorry for you, and I can feel your pain. But I am NOT surprised that they treated you this way. You are lucky your dealer's parts manager is not moronic like the guy on the phone, but for the rest of us..at least for.went through this with pretty much most of the Volvo parts department out there. The only few that I came across that was not as oblivious as the rest were: Fairfax Volvo, Borton Volvo, and Marten Volvo(they were okay).
I've never dealt with a BMW, so I can't comment on how they would response. But honestly, they might just be a bit better and enthusasitc about charging you an arm and a leg for something with BMW badge on it.

I know this but about 80% of my contact with Volvo dealers and personell has not been good. IT seems to be changing as I am in contact with more people in VCNA but i'm still not impressed or excited about going to any dealership (except for the one in Seattle!!!!)

But one thing is for sure, Volvo does not support performance aftermarket as much as the other guys.

Yannis, I wish my local dealer's parts department were filled with people who cared as much as you do (I say parts dept. because that's the only part I deal with, since I own a 240). It's hard to believe how many incompetent under qualified people are hired to fill certain positions with high turnover, but it makes for funny and interesting stories (my dad works in service). I guess it's just part of the business.
And on a lighter note, I hope you didn't burn the parts manager when steam shot from your ears!!

That really stinks Yannis. Sorry to hear about your troubles with VCNA.
This is similar to how the VW Passt folks feel when we go in for service but are somewhat modded (talking lowered and bigger rims). They have given us various thoughts, you're car won't fit on the lift or you have an aftermarket suspension and rims on, we're voiding your warranty. Of course we fight back but they have the last word.
Did you get his last name? Maybe you can report it to someone higher up. Maybe he needs to get retrained and not tell people to get a BMW if they want a performance car.
RJ

So, I know how to report this.
Yannis

Good luck getting satisfaction on this one. It will be nice to hear about someone getting what they have coming.
My local parts department is very helpful...well they try real hard to find info or give me answers. to Roberto at Don Beyer Dulles, VA. I don't think they are particularly use to someone coming in either with part numbers or asking about parts they normally don't sell to customers. But I think they have liked the change of pace or at least talking with a customer who isn't complaining about something.

Yannis,
If this idiot treats a Volvo dealer/parts manager this way, imagine how he must treat us poor lowly owners.

But this type of attitude seeps to other Volvo employees and so on...And it was not the BMW thing; his whole attitude was like "why you are bothering me with something so different?".
Yannis

Volvo parts

I sought out and bought a V70R AWD back in 1997 because I wanted a performance car, needed a family car, and could not afford both.
When I was looking for this car I went to every Volvo dealership within an hour's drive--about six or seven. Nobody had the car...I was told that the "R" stood for "RARE". I thought it stood for "RADIO", because at that time it was the only model where you could get the 400 watt Dolby premium sound system with the Dynaudio speakers. It was not offered as an option in any other car.
I suppose others assumed the "R" stood for "RACING", but since you could not get the car with a manual transmission, clearly it was never intended as a sports/race car--at least not in the USA.
And yet, it seemed very reasonable to assume that because this limited production model had the "R" designation that is was already optimised pretty darn close to peak performance in the areas of quickness, agility, and braking, understanding that some compromises had to be made so that the family/passengers would be reasonably comfortable on long trips.
Volvo used the term, "OUTRAGEOUS" in it's marketing. I took that to mean--max performance, for a family station wagon. Not only that....i took that to mean--anybody who buys this car is a little bit nuts, and doesn't care who knows.
Then, i find out from surfing the www that there are aftermarket companies offering upgrades in every one of these areas: power, handling, braking. Now i understand there is risk in using aftermarket stuff--what do they care about Volvo's reputation for safety and longevity?...and a whole bunch of other issues.
Then, i find out from surfing the www that ***VOLVO*** offers all sorts of upgrades in every one of these areas! Genuine Volvo Parts, promoted by Volvo (secretly)! So I go to my Volvo Dealer's Parts Department and ask them: "I would like to upgrade the front brakes on my car. I understand that my car is available with larger brakes." The parts guy has a very distressed look on his face--he say, "Ahhh...well...those brakes are only for the "R" cars." So I tell him, "Yes, my car is an "R" car, and it has kitty cat brakes, and i want the he-man brakes that came stock on many cars exactly like mine." To make the story short, he said no. He said no.
The same thing happened when I went back to order the dual exhaust which came standard on some cars just like mine. He said, "NO!"
The same thing happened when I went back to order suspension upgrades, alloy wheels, ....
NO NO NO !!!
Even ordering ordinary parts that have nothing to do with performance:
"THAT PART DOES NOT EXIST!!!"
I know what the problem is: and on my last visit to my Dealer Parts Department to pick-up the part I was told did not exist (I tricked them by ordering it by part number, so they didn't know the part didnt' exist) I told the manager of the Parts department:
"You know, I've spent a lot of time with Volvo entheusasts on the WWW, and many of them post about their frustrations in trying to give money to Volvo. We badger and caljoy and harrass Volvo saying: PLEASE, TAKE MY MONEY!!!! I WANT TO GIVE IT TO YOU!!!
And the Volvo parts department says: "NO NO NO>>> TAKE YOUR MONEY AND GO TO AUDI OR BMW. WE DON'T WANT PEOPLE LIKE YOU!!!!"
Ok, that's fine. Volvo does not want the business of people like us.
SO WHY DO THEY BOTHER MAKING ALL THESE PERFORMANCE CARS AND PARTS?????
that's the part I don't get.
But I didn't say all that to him. All I said was, "Volvo has the worst database I've ever seen--and I've seen alot!"
He lowers his head, nodding agreement.
"...and now i understand, it's not your fault--Volvo hired a ****ty programer who is clueless, and you guys are stuck with an impossible system--and get poop probably from both ends for something that is not your fault."
His head, still lowered, nodding.
So when I got home I installed the part that does not exist and the car looks great. Then I came here and tried to delete all the nasty things I've said about the Volvo parts guys.
It's not their fault. It's the fault of the software--the database--the programers, and the guys who hired them.
And Ford may be worried about the liability risk of selling factory performace parts...Americans like to sue--they think of it as "winning the lottery".
