The new Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar is here, set for sale on four continents around the world in 2014.

"We are proud to present the S60 and V60 Polestar. A car developed for those who share our passion at Polestar: That driving really matters and that a true driver's car should enable you to enjoy driving all-year, on all roads and in all weather conditions. This is a driver's car for real life," said Christian Dahl, CEO of Polestar.

"With the introduction of the V60 model, we are proud to continue the heritage of fast Volvo estates like the racing 850 BTCC, a tradition deeply rooted among Volvo enthusiasts," continued Christian Dahl, CEO of Polestar.

Limited Edition
The countries set for the S60 and V60 Polestar include Canada, the Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the USA, with further markets and final production numbers to be revealed next year.

"Our motorsport co-operation with Polestar has been going on for almost two decades and it is rewarding to see how Polestar can use their experiences from motorsport to engineer such an exciting and competent car," said Derek Crabb, Motorsport Director of Volvo Cars.

"It is very satisfying to see how Polestar have been able to combine this level of driving performance in their interpretation of the S60 and V60 with maintained original service program, class leading safety features and certified fuel- and emission ratings. Customers buying this car will get the best from both Polestar and Volvo," said Alain Visser, Senior Vice President Marketing, Sales & Customer Service of Volvo Cars Group.

All-year performance

The car is based on the latest generation Volvo S/V60 and marks the start of an extended Polestar production model range.

Development of the car has been ongoing over the past years, picking up from the C30 and S60 Concept cars and the Australian S60 Polestar. Thousands of development kilometres have been driven on twisty mountain roads, on the Autobahn and test tracks from the south of Europe to the frozen north of Sweden.

"We have continued our work to create a true driver's car which is not limited only to a few specific driving conditions, but enjoyable on everything from your favourite winding roads to taking the family for a long journey, no matter summer or winter. And in my view, we have gotten very close to our goals, something that of course is best experienced first-hand behind the wheel," said Robert Dahlgren, Polestar racing and test driver.

Polestar performance engineering

Chassis
Upgrades include modifications made to increase rigidity of the chassis to cater for the 80% stiffer springs relative to the standard S60 R-Design. These changes combined with the tailored high performance Ă–hlins shock absorbers and 20" Polestar wheels results in a precise, yet comfortable, driving experience.

Brakes
The brake system has undergone substantial modifications. Most visible are the 371 millimetre ventilated front discs and six-piston Brembo calipers, guaranteeing a high level of braking performance.

Aerodynamics
To reflect the increased performance of the S/V60 Polestar, positive aerodynamic effects have been achieved through subtle, yet efficient, modifications based on data from tests in the Volvo Cars wind tunnel. The changes are visible with the front splitters, optimising the airflow underneath the car, as well as a new rear spoiler and diffusor, increasing downforce.

Engine
The six-cylinder turbo-charged T6 engine has undergone extensive development with a new twin-scroll turbo and intercooler to produce 350 HP/257 kW at 5700 rpm and 500 Nm/369 lb-ft already at 2800 rpm. The engine breathes through a 2.5" stainless steel exhaust system, making for a throaty engine note.

Transmission
The six-speed automatic gearbox features a new paddle shift system that together with the Polestar developed Haldex four-wheel drive system takes the car from 0-100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds and to a limited top speed of 250 km/h. The gearbox as well as the four-wheel drive system and traction control system has been recalibrated in order to provide an active driving experience and maximum grip in all situations.

Interior
The interior has been reworked with new details, materials and Polestar colours, such as the steering wheel, seats and more, with the sole purpose of increasing driver support and control.

"All in all we have taken a major step forward in all areas, from chassis and engine to interior and exterior details. Development work has been focused on the overall package in order to create a car that you want to use every day, both from a practical and emotional perspective," said Henrik Fries, S/V60 Polestar Technical Project Manager.

Sales and delivery

Polestar will begin delivery of the new S60 and V60 Polestar in June 2014 to the local markets.

"We are all very excited and proud over our launch of two new cars as yet another step towards a range of Polestar Engineered Volvo cars available for people like us around the world. To do it together with Volvo, one of the world's leading car manufacturers, is greatly satisfying and we look forward to an exciting future," said Christian Dahl, CEO of Polestar.

Still a modern diesel isn't bad. Not really noisy and a nice torque band. You can't really compare to gasoline solely on power figures. Most diesels do not rev that high so peak power will be lower compared to gasoline engine's. And 0-60 is only a very small part of the equation. From a roll the difference in many area's is a lot smaller and the diesel might even have the edge.

If these land in the US for the low- to mid- $50s, they'll make an interesting alternative to the 335 and S4, whose price tags are rapidly becoming insane.

If the price starts with a '6' though, they'll meet the same fate as they did in Australia last year.

Certainly nice to see an enthusiast pulse still beating, even if it has to come courtesy of a third party.

I'm sure it will be under 60, though a fully loaded could get into the low 60s'.

Let's see if this ever gets posted on the V60/Volvo websites for the US.

I was able to build a "nicely equipped" Macan S for 58K.

I'd seriously like to have a "Haulers" Challenge road test between the following cars. Calling Motor Trend...

PoleStar V60
BMW 335i Grand Truismo
Audi SQ5
Porsche Macan S

Yes, this is not you're typical "small SUV" comparison test; however, if I were in the market for SUV/wagon priced between the upper 40's to mid-50"s then I'd look at these four.

BTW, the Porsche comes standard with a 7-speed PDK tranny.

Let's bring back a familiar color...

or introduce a new color...

For some reason the saffron was a bit off on my iPhone.

As far as manuals go - if they pair a manual to one four-cylinder petrol, they basically have the parts to pair it to all of them. They just need to be able to handle the torque. So, since we're going to all 4-cylinders...

#102 ·
Volvo already will be able to readily supply a 6-speed manual to any of the Drive-E engines since they have 6-speed manuals for the new D4. One benefit of the fact that they will all be common 4-cylinder engines is that manual transmission swaps will be a breeze. One part fits all. (OR at least, that's in theory, but that's better than the current set-up)

I agree. That would be an epic color for this car (V60, not S60). I also do not like any of the greens (anachronistic, these days) and the Sonic Blue is nice but I would much rather have the Rebel Blue; more modern and more distinctive.

One major sporty color is missing and I am surprised we did not include it; Passion Red.

#110 ·
Remember when we could do polls here. Now would be a nice time for that feature. That Polestar/French Blue just doesn't do it for me. Its distinctive, but not in a good way. It doesn't express performance, or exclusivity, or even Swedishness. Time for some design help. I suppose everyone saw the limited edition new Vette in what can only be described as BRG. Still a dynamite color. If Volvo were to seek my opinion. I would go with either a chrome yellow (not the you know what yellow they used on the 98-99 Rs) or a charcoal green like BRM used to race in. Automobiles need a signature color. Red on a Ferrari, Blue on a Maserati, Silver on a Benz, Green on a Jag, What on a Volvo?

#112 ·
This anecdotal but 100% true. Since 1994, I have driven countless Volvo's of every iteration and color combination.

These three (with the last one eliciting the most frequent and emotional responses by strangers in the road or when I was not driving):

2004 Passion Red S60R with the Sport package and 18" Titanium wheels
2006 Sonic Blue V70R w/ 18" Titanium wheels
2013 Rebel Blue C30 R-design

The type of feedback I got while having driven the C30 for close to 6,500 miles was just unbelievable. Forget the thumbs up everywhere...some people (men or women) in cars ranging from regular sedans to huge F250 trucks with raised suspensions would honk repeatedly (to the point where I would question myself if I had done something wrong) in order to get my attention to either tell me how great the car looked to a simple smile and thumbs up.

I have received similar feedback from colleagues that have driven a Rebel Blue S60 R-design.

Simply, Rebel Blue is a very striking color, not very common and it complements most Volvos. It is not for everyone but it does garner a lot of attention.

My own Classic Red V70 T5 wagon still gets second looks and occasional comments despite being 12.5 years old.

A good red never goes out of style.

Nothing Swedish about Rebel Blue!

#113 ·
If Volvo went with the Blue from the Swedish flag or the blue used for the stitching I would go for it. But as Matt's pictures point out it isn't the same. The French Blue Polestar uses is slightly lighter and softer, more delicate and feminine, like something you would see in a boudoir. Grecian, go up to Oxnard to Peter Mullin's museum and look at the French race cars and see if I am not right.

#114 · (Edited)
Swedish Azure (#005B99), the color of the Swedish Flag, is on top.

Reflex Blue (#0055A4), the color of the French Flag, is on bottom.

Here's the average color in the Rebel Blue V60 R-Design in the photo below, taken by applying a blur across the body of the car:

This is an important discussion. We cannot stand for someone calling Rebel Blue "French." The Swedish military should immediately go on full alert in response to this insult.

#127 ·
Matt, we need to work on your Photoshop skills. :p

#124 ·
Reflex Blue is a print industry-standard PMS color.

#116 ·
I put this up for Yannis on our Facebook page. Red wagons do look good!

#117 ·
Thanks, Chris. It looks kinda of "orangy" to me here; more like the Audi red rather than Passion Red but I think it is the inferior quality display of the Dell laptop.

Your picture looks quite better on an iPad or even iPhone.

#118 ·
You won't get an argument from me on the crappy quality of a Dell Laptop, but if that is what VCNA issues you, what can I do. This is subtle stuff, but it sells cars. I remember being told RED on a Ferrari is worth $10,000. I really hope VCC is listening to this one. That French/Boudoir Blue is a loser. A Swedish Azure, to use Matt's phrase, is a winner.

#120 ·
I hope you are right and that Polestar Blue and Swedish Blue are the same thing. You are the first person, to my knowledge, to say that "Rebel" (whatever that may mean) Blue and Polestar Blue are two different colors. Although we are talking about matters of individual taste and very subtle differences, I still think that "Swedish Blue" is a great color and should be used.

The parked V60 and the S60 in your post look like two different colors to me. The V60 looks darker and richer, whereas the S60 looks like the French Racing/Boudoir Blue to me.

That has been common knowledge here for more than a year now. You need to spend more time here rather than in the MB forums...
