The Hidden Costs of Luxury: My Volvo XC90 T8 Hybrid Nightmare

In 2017, I made what I thought was a forward-thinking decision: purchasing a Volvo XC90 T8 hybrid. Despite concerns from friends and family about hybrid reliability, particularly the battery system, I was captivated by the vehicle's modern design and luxurious features. Volvo's 8-year hybrid battery warranty seemed like sufficient protection for my investment.

My faith in Volvo began crumbling in fall 2021 when the Electric Rear Axle Drive (ERAD) failed. Though covered under warranty, this was just the beginning of my hybrid system troubles.

The real nightmare began in November 2024, merely 10 days after my factory warranty expired. My hybrid battery completely failed, triggering multiple alarming messages: "Reduced performance," "Hybrid system failure," and "12V battery charging fault, service urgent." The timing couldn't have been worse. The replacement cost? A staggering 10,000 CAD ($7,000 for the battery plus labor). To put this in perspective, a used XC90 T8 of the same age and mileage sells for just 28,000 CAD - meaning the repair cost is over one-third of the car's value!

While Volvo agreed to partially cover the costs after my complaint, what followed was even more frustrating. Two months later, my car still sits at the dealership, with no estimated delivery date for the replacement battery. I'm caught in an endless loop between Volvo corporate and the dealership, each directing me to the other for answers. This forced me to cancel my planned Christmas trip to the US, with no end in sight to this ordeal.

Potential Volvo hybrid buyers, consider this a warning: The premium price tag doesn't guarantee premium reliability or service. The real cost of ownership may far exceed your expectations, and Volvo's supply chain issues can leave you without transportation for months. What good is a luxury vehicle if it can't be repaired in a timely manner?

After this experience, I can confidently say this will be my first and last Volvo. Don't let the sleek design and eco-friendly promises fool you - the long-term costs and headaches aren't worth it.

Have made a video here:

If you are a victim of T8's hybrid system please add comments to the video. Thanks

16-17 are first gen SPA cars. Junk. Just like the new EX line, and the C40, XC40 recharge.

Stay away from those, and you'll have a good time. I've owned over 10 different Volvos in the last 15 years without major issues to leave me or my family stranded and keep us safe.

Sorry about your experience. Time to move on before your repair bill keeps adding up.

But for safety, stick with Volvo all the way.

Yeah, we’ve had our share of problems with Volvos. All non-hybrid though. I have to ask though. In your 7 years of ownership, did you have any other problems? If that was all, I’d say that’s far better than the average Volvo PHEV owner. You should have certainly experienced more issues than just that.

Unfortunately the hybrid problems were and are predictable and still occur through 2024 models. That was never a secret. An extended warranty would have covered your Hybrid batteries too. I know it’s all hindsight. I’m sorry you’ve had to adjust your life in order to own a Volvo. There are a lot of people in your circumstance.

I truly believe this was part of the Volvo engineer’s investment in the future. Ensuring the Volvos last only so long, ensuring the services of complex systems can only be done at Volvo dealers, and planned obsolescence of sub par parts ensures owners would be pinned into the corner of potentially trading up to a new Volvo. Having a good chance of keeping all the money in house. It’s like medical care - healthy patients are bad for business. Likewise, reliable cars are not good for dealerships and the bottom line. I know, tin foil hat.

In my mind, I am assuming my 2022.5 T8 is worth $0 the day extended warranty expires. It is a complicated vehicle that needs to be serviced by a dealer, and their costs are $$$. The car has already depreciated significantly in 2.5 years.

I am surprised a car that old sells for CAD28k. Here a '17 T8 Inscription is barely worth $13k.

See the TSB here....

Battery replacements for all SPA vehicles are available, but not with an original P27 9.6kWh pack (used in MY2016/17 XC90). Volvo changed to a version that has replaceable cell modules from 2018 on - these packs can be fitted to the older vehicles, although specific software patches are needed to use the larger battery packs.
