Within 3 weeks, I've had a clutch problem, driverside window problems, and just tonight a key error that left me stranded 20 miles away from home. So the time has come to dump this problem onto somebody else. Goodbye Volvo. It was fun, but not really.

why dont you make an issue about it and get a replacement car?
obviously sounds like its one of those lemon cars i think?
car itself is great, hundreds swear by it including most on this forum, its just unfortunate that you got one with a few probs.
i had the odd teething probs with my 1.8 s40se but volvo were very good in sorting them out...
cars are machines afterall... what machine do you know has never had problems?
but your choice at the end of the day, i know if i got a voucher for another car for instance, i would still swear by a volvo

Marvyn, can you explain the window and clutch issues. Had a simliar issue with my driverside window.
Have also had SSS, air conditioning issue, stereo issue, and my driver side mirror recently cracked. Have had the car since Oct 04.

Re: The end is near (MarvynDT)

Wouldn't fall under normal lemon laws as the problems are different each time (every other week), not a recurring problem. I'm not saying that the S40 is a bad car, just the one I have is not for me. I am not too happy about having my car at the dealership every other week nor am I happy with the way my clutch problem was addressed. So to me, a problem car and unsatisfactory customer service has led me to want to dump the car.
I had enjoyed my S40, minus the lack of iPod integration, until the last few months (bought in Dec 2004). It's time to move on.
driverside window - window cannot go all the way up, else safety feature kicks in and it sends the window back down
key error - key is not recognized
cluth problem - you can read about it
here

Re: The end is near (MarvynDT)

Twice my driver side window stop working automaticly. It rolls up and down only if you hold the button. First time it happen was about 1 month after I got the car. The dealer fixed it. The second time it happened was when I flashed my BSR. I rolled down the window just prior to the tune. Right after the flash, the window experienced the problem again. I thought it was BSR overwriting something but later I was able to get it to work again. What I did was rolled down the window all the way down then rolled the window back up. When the window rolled all the way to the top, I held the button in the up position for a few seconds (5-6).
Is this the same problem you are having?
Re: The end is near (volvoNB)

My window will not go all the way up and seal against trim, whether you use the automatic rollup or manually. The safety will kick in and force the window back down.

Re: The end is near (MarvynDT)

I've had my share of issues with my Volvo. No sound out of the radio (software upgrade), automatic climate control only blowing hot air out of the passenger's side vents (software upgrade), fuel gauge reading full although I knew the tank was empty (software upgrade), my spare tire well filling with water (replaced rear hatch weather stripping),... AND I can not stand the remote control being tied to the driver's seat memory. If you move your seat and don't use the remote to lock the door, the next time you get in the seat will go back to the last position it was at when you did lock the doors with the remote. (crushed a bag of groceries and nearly a tray of coffees that I had on the floor behind the seat) My dealership claimed they could not disable this "feature". An audio system that can't handle mp3s and doesn't have an easy solution for an auxilary input. And how about a service manual Volvo???
However none of this compares to your clutch problem. I did own a Saab whose second gear sychro went. I had a Saab dealership in Rahway rebuild it. Not only did they charge me an arm and a leg for the work, shortly after I got the car back I discovered they had cracked the transmission housing. When I brought it back to them they refused to fix it. I had to take them to small-claims court. I eventually got my money back but what a headache.
Have you started looking for a replacement yet? The new GTI looks interesting.

Re: The end is near (MarvynDT)

my friend, I feel your pain on the clutch but mine was much worse off....and after an outrageous phone bill from calling Volvo Customer Service, Volvo NA Reps, dealerships, etc, etc... it was finally fixed but they have more than made amends for their transgressions by repaying my entire rental car bill, part of my phone bill, and even extending my warranty for another 4000 miles (because thats how many miles where on the car when it happened)!
So fret not, just keep upping the complaint level and youll finally reach someone who can fix it!
p.s. view the whols Clutch Saga here http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=44325

Great feature, and we didn't even know it had it until we got the car. I just lock the car with the key, done deal.

Re: The end is near (TFS)

For those who like it that's great but it would make sense for Volvo to allow you to disable this feature if you don't. Not only does Volvo not allow you to disable this feature (say via the center console menu) but my dealership tells me they are unable to disable it as well. So Volvo has weaved these "niffty features" into their car and according to Volvo you WILL LIKE THEM because apparently Volvo doesn't like their customers to have choice. Big Brother Volvo.
Their seats are very comfortable but I can't stand the remote memory and Volvo doesn't give me the option to disable it. Their sound system sounds good enough but I can't stand that their system doesn't handle MP3s, DVDs, no auxilary input AND they have tied the stereo in so tightly with the rest of their systems (such as their annoying automatic climate control) you can't go with an aftermarket system. Once again Volvo leaves it's customer with no options.
I'm kicking myself for not thinking of this before I purchased the car. Unless something changes with Volvo, there is no way I'm recommending a Volvo to someone else or purchasing another.
Re: The end is near (v50t5black)

I admit the near $1000 for a sub is crazy, but the tightly tied in system is not unique to Volvo.. nay try a baby Benz, where the cel phone was tied into the CD, you want a CD you need to buy the cel phone and pay the $$$ a month. Then Benz wonders why the C class coupe was such a BOMB in sales, cuase me and everybody else in the world ain't gonna put down $2200 and an additional $40 a month to the a CD which only comes with a phone

Sorry to hear about all your problems.
What car will you be getting then?
I'd be a bit apprehensive about VWs- they look nice but if you're looking for reliable, I'd be a bit skeptical about them.
Volvo does not give it's customers or the dealership the option to disable it. Not very customer friendly.

I understand your frustration and am sorry that you don't like the feature, but I think this falls into the "can't be all things to all people" category. It would be great, if expensive, if the US market were like other world markets where you could order all options a la carte, and thus get exactly the car you want. But it's not, and so sometimes we have to live with features we don't like to get ones we do, or forego the ones we want to avoid getting ones we don't.
Anyway, even in your case, isn't this issue the exception and not the rule? In other words, isn't the seat normally moving to exactly the position you want?

If you bought sunroof+leather, your passenger seat would be manual and your driver's seat would be electric but w/o memory. You could tell immediately by looking for the three memory buttons.
Did you mean to say you ordered Premium? In an 06, you can't order sunroof and leather separately, but in an 05 you could have. I did! (In fact, I got leather didn't get the sunroof as was my choice)
Tom.

On another occation I had a tray of coffee on the floor behind my seat. Same result, I must have not used the remote to lock the door and when I got back in the seat went back and started to crush the tray of coffee. I managed to stop the seat before the cups burst open. All this for an "option" that is totally useless for me as I am the only person that drives the car and am totally capable of manually adjusting my seat to where I'd like it. I was at the point where I was willing to pay the dealership to pull the plug on this but they claim it can't be done.

The dealership told me it would be cheaper to order the Premium package which bundles together the sunroof, leather and seat memory. The bullets in the package include the 3-position memory function but don't mention the "Remote Seat Memory" and still don't.
From Volvo's site:
Premium Package
· Power Glass Moonroof
· Leather Seating Surfaces
· Power-Adjustable Passenger Seat, 8-Way with Lumbar Support
· Memory Function for Power-Adjustable Driver Seat, 3-Position
I have no problem with the 3-position memory function, I don't use it. It is the memory tied to the key fob. This is not a 3-position deal it memorizes the last position your seat was in when you use the key fob to lock the door. That gets used by default, no choice. Had I known before hand I would have ordered the sunroof and leather seperately. The catch was my dealership really didn't seem to have a grasp on this option either. When I initially explained to them what I wanted disabled they didn't understand. I had to show them and as I mentioned, they claim it can not be disabled.
