I was thinking how seldom I see other V50's on the road. I travel frequently and have only seen three V50's in the six months I've had my car...Two 2.4i's driven by women in their late 40's/early 50's and a T5 AWD driven by a couple who looked to be in their 80's(kudos to Volvo marketing)
I had no idea the NA sales report numbers were that low for the V50. From June '04 through May '06 they've sold just under 10,000 in the US..around 400 a month..V50 sales have decreased every month since October....8 month avg. -27%..so it will probably plateau around 5,000 a year...I would've guessed about twice that number...closer to Passat wagon sales(10,000-12,000)
So when the power steering pump goes at 3k..the radio freezes..buttons and latches break..recalls are put out..and the car won't start(6 out of the past 7 mornings!)..at least I won't see five or six other V50's while I'm driving to work...then again...maybe those are some of the reasons i don't see five or six V50's while I'm driving to work.

Re: The elusive V50 (fjordV50)

I came back from a trip in Europe and I saw a lot more S40s/V50s on the road. It's not as common as a 3-series, but definetly were more popular over there than here.
Hope you get everything sorted out with your car...

Re: The elusive V50 (fjordV50)

I've seen very few V50's, maybe three or four in the 2 years they've been out. I was in the Bay Area(Palo Alto,Menlo Park) a couple days ago and new Volvo's are very popular there, lots of S40's, but even more XC90's. I've never seen so many before, they're everywhere. In my neighborhood of Fresno CA, Volvo's are very popular too, for example: Across the street from me an XC90, next door to them an S40, we have an S40, directly behind us an XC70 and S80, next door to them an XC90, next door to us an older 940 wagon, two blocks down the street an XC90, two V70's, and another XC70. Our neighborhood has tons of Volvos, but again, no V50's

few V50's... i've only seen around 5.
But I must say that Baton Rouge has a lot of S40's out there. Our dealership advertises very well. I hate to say it, but more and more sorority girls at LSU are starting to get the S40. It's like the new "in" car. God forbid.

Here in the UK V50's are quite scarce - on a recent 200 mile trip I saw maybe half a dozen one of which was a Paramedic Rapid Response Vehicle. Even the S40 is quite thin on the ground.
I find the 'rarity' of them on the roads suits me - I hate to be one of the 1000's who drive a 3 series, an Audi, a Mondeo or other 'rep mobile', preferring to be a little bit different.
Nothing wrong with them of course, fine cars etc but a little too common in numbers...
Just after I got the V50 we parked at a local Garden Centre (sort of supermarket for all things garden) and parked the car in the shade (we had the dog in the back) and left the window half open (it was February so still cold before I get accused of neglect ) and went in to get some stuff. When we came out this guy was stood by the car and I was all gee'd up for a "You shouldn't leave your dog ..blah blah blah" but he said "I've never seen one of these before - is it an import?" He was impressed by the V50 and I have to wonder if he would have even said hi, if it was a BMW or Audi?
Anyway, I have thought about going back 30 years and maybe start to acknowledge other V50 drivers. In my childhood my father used to give other drivers of MG Magnettes a wave as recognition of a fellow owners. So in this day and age of being cocooned in our cars with no interest in others except for the odd bout of road rage or horn blowing lets all give each other a nod or wave?...
...and wonder if the other driver said "Who the hell was that?....."

The car's not unreliable at all, and certainly isn't experiencing sales dips because of issues.
The problem is its size. It's a crossover - too small for a US family, too big and/or too "wagon" for a single buyer. Wait'll you see the C30.
On sales, you're right that since US introduction it has sold 9949 units, the best month was Sept 05 where 557 were sold. Currently it's settled down on around 350/month, at the same time the S40 sells over 2000. Which doesn't bother me a bit either, personally. There's never a better Volvo than its wagons. Well, except for its turbo wagons.
I track the sales in a spreadsheet from time to time. I'll update in a few days when the new figures apear.
Tom.

I see lots of them here. At least two or three per day. Usually black or dark blue color.

I second digitalpmp's comment. I've been here in baton rouge and you see a lot of S40s 2.4i, not many T5s. As for S60s, I've seen quite a few of those too.
As for the V50, haven't seen many myself. As a matter of fact only 1 and I looked at it for a while. I don't know why...it looks the same to my car on the inside. I have to say that I think it's a nice car. I think that it's been designed very well and it looks really good.

I'm outside Chicago, and I've only seen two or three V50s in the 18 months since I've owned mine. I'm seeing more and more S40s, though--three or four in the last month. Lots of S60s and above around here, too.
I think part of the problem is marketing. I can't recall ever seeing an ad of any kind spotlighting the V50. It's too bad, too--the combination of sportiness and carrying capability is fantastic. I wonder if they didn't know how to market it--the S40 and V50 seem to be lumped together in ad campaigns (with the V50 always in the background), but I suspect the target audiences for the S40 and the V50 are very different. (S40-younger; V50-older)
Unfortunately, now other carmakers are entering the market with similar kinds of cars--and, apparently, better marketing campaigns. Too bad--Volvo has a winner, but they aren't telling anyone about it!

I was at the Home Depot last weekend, and there was actually another one, two spots closer to the store with a big van hiding mine from sight. I spent two minutes with the remote and all the door handles wondering why I couldn't get my locks to open until I realized I was trying to get into a 2.4i ! (I actually noticed the badge before I read the plate - how's that for an enthusiast?)

Like d_man says, I'm seeing quite a few S40/V50 these days. I'll see at least 2 to 3 of them on a short errands trip any day.

Re: (Pez)

I have seen a few V50s around San Diego. There's a white one commuting the other direction on the freeway in the morning once in a while, and twice I have seen a silver T5 in the strip mall where I go to buy pet food. It wouldn't surprise me if I'll have the only AWD around here.
The new S40s are definitely better represented. But I still see more old V40s than either V50s or old S40s!
Eric

Re: (vizsladriver)

I got my V50 for this reason. not everyone has one. nice thing is that less than 2 % of european V50 buyers , get the T5, ... wonder how many of those add extensive mods etc. ? I haven't been up against a faster Volvo , let alone a faster V50.

Re: The elusive V50 (fjordV50)

There are 2 other black V50s in our parking lot at work, both people who got them after I got mine, but they are both bone stock. One other person has a white S40, also stock. Kinda fun to park next to them, makes my car look better.
