The car doesn't have to be smogged again for another 2 years, but I would like to, if at all possible, solve this issue well before then. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.....Thanks

Modified by 1sciroccofahrer at 5:01 PM 5-11-2006

Sirocco,
In IL, they just plug a scanner in the OBD2 port and scan for codes and to check to see if a CEL is on. That makes me glad that I am not in Cali any more. Its also a free test.
Could the TB need a good cleaning? Thats all I can think of if your 96 is not posting codes.

Re: (DVolvoguy777)

Hey VolvoGuy! I never thought about the TB being a possible issue.....I am going to have a look at, and if it does indeed need cleaning I will do that, and even though it passed smog, take it to be smogged again to see if the NO comes down. Thanks for the help VolvoGuy
p.s. I forgot to add that there are no codes being posted.

Re: (1sciroccofahrer)

What's the TB? I have high NO levels at 15 MPH and my car didn't pass.

Re: The '96 850 passed CA smog this afternoon...... (1sciroccofahrer)

Here in MA we go by CA emissions.
my NA 850 barely passed.
try cleaning the TB (throttle body)
short term mechanic suggestion which i did and it helped: add some chevron techron gas additive. it could clean things out a bit allow for a cleaner burn.
also to do for me this summer: new plugs/wires/dist.
hopefully i pass next year, too.
any other tips for passing smog?

They're pretty tough here in Cali.
My 99 S70 passed by a hair a year & 1/2 ago. I am NOT looking forward to going back in November, as I don't expect it to pass. I think there is a dollar limit ($500?) as to how much repairs you must perform to try to make it pass. Once you show receipts, I think they clear you for DMV registration, but $500 (or similar amount) isn't cheap!
If it's much more than 5 bills, I may take off the 18" wheels & tires and suspension upgrades & roll her over a cliff to make room for the 98T5M wagon I've always wanted in my garage.
