Something new next year:

Already in the next year, Volvo can also introduce a T4 Twin Engine, GPS-based regeneration and a GPS-controlled cruise control. The car can then adjust the speed in a curve and also take care of the battery in a smarter way.
So the GPS-helped Pilot Assist may come to all models next year I guess.

Test run of the Volvo XC40 T5 Twin Engine

The XC40 T5 Twin Engine at the old limestone quarry Furillen on Gotland.
As we have yeared for Volvo's charging hybrid version of the acclaimed SUV XC40. But as many as now are disappointed with the price approaching half a million kronor. And what is it really for the XC40 that is delivered just before the turn of the year? Not even a world premiere can really answer it.

This is new!
Electric hybrid
The XC40 is equipped with a battery pack and electric motor to be able to run approximately five mil on electricity.

An electric motor
Unlike the charging hybrids on the SPA platform, only one electric motor is used, and the XC40 is only front-wheel drive.

New battery
From week 46, XC40 is equipped with the latest battery pack, which means longer range.

A bit too short range, slightly late outside and too expensive. It is with those feelings for the Volvo XC40 T5 Twin Engine i land on Gotland for the very first Test run of Volvo's folk hybrid. The cars that are set outside the airport in Visby belong to the special versions that Volvo picked up to launch earlier this spring. This means a given equipment level and an initial specification of the battery. The Car series we test drive began to be built in Volvo's factory in Belgian Ghent during Week 17 this year. But the cars that you can order now start to be built in week 46 and can be delivered to customers in Sweden earliest before the end of the year. Volvo will release its entire equipment range and a lot of updates are made on the car.

The XC40 in its hybrid version is only front-wheel drive.

The main innovation for model year 2020 is that the entire battery pack is expanded and gets the same 15% increase in power as we have seen in the SPA cars in the spring. This means that the reach steps over it in China so important the five-mile limit, according to the NEDC poll, on a charge. Cars built from week 46 also get fuel heaters. Heating cars that are on charge is already standard for the previous cars. The fact box for this test drive applies to the cars that you can buy new today with delivery before the end of the year while the images you see are taken on the R design version that was built earlier this year for the first launch.

Volvo XC40 T5 Twin Engine-6
The XC40 has much in common with the coming Polestar 2, but it is, however, full electric.

There is also a third improvement. When I tested the S60 T8 Twin Engine in Los Angeles last fall, I complained of a high-frequency sound that is available from the charging hybrid electric powertrain. The same annoying noise is also available here at the XC40. It is evident when I release the gas, but according to Volvo's charging Hybridexpert Robert Lilja There is sound there even at the gas turn-on. Lilja promises that the cars that start to be built week 46 will be adjusted to bring down just the sound I discussed with Volvo's staff about already in Los Angeles. However, dare Lilja does not say anything about improvements on the SPA hybrids. I sincerely hope that Volvo will deal with the high-frequency wining sound of all its charging hybrids. For it is a sound that competitors somehow managed to isolate away.

The petrol engine is aided by just one electric motor. The T8 options for the XC90 and the XC60 have two.

Already in the next year, Volvo can also introduce a T4 Twin Engine, GPS-based regeneration and a GPS-controlled cruise control. The car can then adjust the speed in a curve and also take care of the battery in a smarter way. Today, the driver must use the Hold button in the center console to stop draining the battery. It can for example be good if you know you should run five, ten Mil and after that enter an area where it fits well with electricity.

The interior is still well known.

Volvo has chosen to in the Run Program Hybrid drain the battery to a level of work where there is electricity left for the basic needs. Other driving programs are Pure, for electric Drive, Power, where the electric and petrol engine runs at full power, and Off Road. According to Volvo, the delay of the XC40 T5 Twin Engine, if it is even a delay, is that the factory in Ghent needs a quieter start to the production of it for the brand new powertrain. My explanation is that Volvo misjudged the demand for batteries and now needs to make a tactical launch based on the supply of batteries more than the demand for cars. My theory is reinforced by the fact that Volvo directly picks a new battery pack for the actual construction start.

It is a little harder to understand and see Volvo's pricing strategy. The cheapest Momentum version, the one that starts to be built in week 46, has a price of 459 900 kronor. It is in itself clearly cheaper than prospective competitor Audi Q5 TFSI-E and probably also the charging hybrid version of the BMW X1 that will come to Europe in a few years. If we pick up a competitor from Mercedes, it's almost all new GLB. Unfortunately, we now know very little about Mercedes GLB but Mercedes is one of the manufacturers who are quickly chasing on to reach a reach for their hybrids of about ten miles.

Upcoming company car favorite but expensive. The T4 Twin Engine should come and become the entry-level model.

But those who look beyond the given premium competitors will find plenty of plug-in hybrid options that are significantly cheaper and also have a longer range of electricity than the XC40. Kia Niro or Optima and the summer novelty Volkswagen Passat GTE can all three compete with the Volvo XC40 T5 Twin Engine in terms of reach and price. Unlike the T8 and T6 Twin Engine cars, the XC40 T5 Twin Engine is only front-wheel drive. A single electric motor works together with a double junction box to pick up power from the battery or the combustion engine to the front axle. According to Volvo, this is a cheaper alternative than the double electric motors in the T8 cars.

Jan-Erik behind the wheel of a long-awaited news - Volvo XC40 as a charging hybrid.

The battery pack in the XC40 Twin Engine is at 10.7 kWh and we compare the service weight to a standard XC40 T3 we see that the battery pack and the new powertrain weigh about 200 kg. The battery also affects the inner space with a slightly shallower center bracket, no place for the hat shelf under the floor in the trunk and the floor is also not foldable. Volvo has also removed the 17-inch wheels in favor of 18, 19 or 20 inches on the charging hybrid. The higher weight is not particularly noticeable in the driving characteristics. On the Gotlandic country roads, XC40 shows the same fine steering and roadholding that once gave the car the title Car of the Year 2018. The battery pack has also not affected its position, comfort or space in the rear seat. The design is the same as the previous XC40 with the addition of a very anonymous sign where it says Twin Engine on the tailgate and hatch to the charging socket on the left fender.
