The temps in Washington have been climbing and an old problem from last summer is once again rearing its ugly head. When the car sits in the sun for awhile, the electronic release in the trunk lid ceases to cooperate. This condition is accompanied by the amber triangle and "trunk lid open" message on the display, both of which disappear after a minute or two of driving. I've found that a couple of medium-force blows to the Volvo badge usually does the trick (not kidding). What is most annoying is the alarm will not arm when I lock the doors via the keyfob. Last night I watched the car spontaneously arm itself about ten minutes after I locked it, which I assume means that the latch or button cooled down and reestablished contact with the central locking system.
Anyone else experience this with their cars? I am under warranty but my dealer will not investigate it further until they witness the condition. I've attempted to recreate the problem for them three times with no success... I'm sick of wasting my time with the dealer. Is it difficult to separate the plastic panel from the lid? I'm hoping there is a loose connection behind the panel that I can address myself.
As satisfying as it is to beat the daylights out of my car, this needs to come to an end before I break something.
Thanks in advance.... - Tryg

I had something similar happen on my previous Saab. It turned out to be just some dirt that accumulated, however, this doesn't sound like it would help you.
Well, we'll be out of the mid-90's by mid week!

Re: Tempermental latch on trunk lid during hot weather (RainyS60R)

Take a look at the rear window trim. There is a end cap near the trunk lid that I have seen move with temp changes. Not sure if it can get so close to interfere with the lid latching, but maybe.

Re: (phuz)

We had a string of upper 90's days recently and the R ran like a charm, including the trunk latch. I think alot of the problems people have had were solved in the '06 R. I know I have less than 2000 miles on Thor, but he hasn't given me a bit of trouble, including no loss of power on hot days.

yes, right beside the button to release the rear headrests.
it basically locks the trunk (with master key in ignition) so that when you use the valet key, you can not get in the trunk.
smart design, but it fooled me for a couple hours until i was actually able to see that i had accidentally pressed it.

The last time the car was in for service I asked about the intermittent latch problem. Thankfully, Feta II recreated the problem for the tech and service writer on the third attempt to demonstrate the problem. When i picked up the car later that day the dealer had installed a brand new latch mechanism under warranty. The new one sounds much better than the last one - a quick little solenoid sound on release. The old latch made a much less convincing noise when I pressed the trunk release - longer and almost as if it were struggling to unlatch. No problems since. I suggest a conversation with the dealer the next time you are in, assuming you are under warranty.
