My 98 S70 GLT has a very loud sound that sounds like it is probably a valve but I'm not positive and if it is a valve, can I just pull the top off and adjust them like the old hydraulic valves?
The strange thing is that it doesn't do it all of the time. Not even the majority of the time, but when it does, it is very pronounced. . . tat tat tat tat tat tat is the best way for me to describe it. The sound will get faster with the engine speed as well.
I have changed my timing belt, front axles and struts, rotors and break lines but never torn into the engine. Is this something that I can take care of or will it take an expert mechanic for this job? Or do I even need to worry about it?
Thanks
Probably a sticking lifter (and no you CANNOT adjust them, wouldn't do any good anyway).
Try a can of Lucas valve/engine treatment while at the same time changing your oil!
That stuff is pretty good and has helped many a Volvo owner with your symptoms

A full SEAFOAM MOTOR treatment will also help you big time
(Search for it if you don't know what it is)
Use this, follow the instuctions caerfully THEN change your oil and add the Lucas.
(You may not need it after this)

I was experiencing similar symptoms, and had almost lost hope, when a friend of mine introduced me to the BG product "109". The BG products are also very well respected in the industry.
One 11 ounce can added to a warm crankcase, 20-30 minutes run-time (the noise was gone after about 10 minutes), and I consider the results to be a miracle. I have been waiting for an opportunity to laud the results.
DO change your oil after the process.

Please do some research on the BG products. I realize that the products mentioned in some of the other posts are effective as well.
Just as a reference to the quality of products in the BG line, their product MOA has an amazing claim. If it is used by an authorized technician (and documented) with every oil change beginning with a vehicle at 70,000 miles or less, the company will warranty the motor for life.
For me, that demonstrates confidence in the quality of their product.
Good luck.
You are welcome to email me with any questions that you have regarding the use of the 109

Re: Tat tat tat tat tat goes the valve? (castconcrete)

I've decided to give the Sea Foam a try. However, most instructions that I can find indicate that the can should be distributed between the crankcase, fuel tank and intake manifold via the break booster line.
The problem is that I can't find the break booster line in order to have the engine suck in 1/3 of the Sea Foam.
Can you give me a clue as to where I can pour this in? I can see the break booster but cannot for the life of me see any tube coming out of it like the 240 series has.
Thanks
Any vacuum line near the throttle body
There is a vacuum tree, disconnect one line and funnel it in there.
You really need to put it in all 3 places.
Your car will become a smoke bomb for 20 minutes or so. When the smoke stops, drive it for 1/2 hour to an hour then change the oil and add the Lucas (or the BG).

Re: Tat tat tat tat tat goes the valve? (JRL)

Wow! This stuff really is amazing. I Poured 1/3 of the can into my gas tank, 1/3 into my oil and sucked the last 1/3 into the vacuum hose. Let it sit for 15 minutes and started it up.
I'm sure that my neighbors thought that I blew my engine by all the smoke this generated!
I'm guessing that the amount of smoke isn't necessarily proportional to the amount of crud; is that correct?
I could tell a big difference in the way that the engine sounds, accelerates and response times. And this is even after I just replaced the plugs, cap, rotor and wires.
So, how often should this be done?
Thanks again for everyone's help and input. I feel like I have a new car.

Once every 50-75k depending on the car itself
On a well serviced car from day one, I would think 75K for the 1st one.
I did my R at about 80K, made not much of a difference but I was at a good stage 0 already

Good to hear, but have you changed out your oil now?
Make sure to do an oil change very soon after putting the SeaFoam in the oil!
