If I take the plastic cover and put something like a pantyhose or etc...What changes?
Does the performance decrease because of the warm engine and sound increase?

Ok guys you found the question funny maybe but this is an idea I saw on some cars.

It will definately give the car a little growl under WOT. But you may suffer from some heat soak.

It's an old drag racing trick, something you'd often see on a Holley 4 barrel with a pack of ice wrapped around it along with the hood removed on a small block Chevy Nova at the drags on a Saturday.
(Ahh... reminiscing. The good ol days)
Why???
Same principle of using a K&N versus a stock paper filter media.
Less filtering quicker supply of air available for consumption/ingestion.
On a turbo application, this could mean quicker spool or in some cases more importantly, less stall.
Anyway,
yeah, you'll still see them these days even still on say a monster turbo'd Honda or maybe even a Lightning or Mustang with the headlight removed and turbo inlet right behind where light should be.
This is a race day mod, and for day to day driving should not be even considered, unless you just don't care how long the turbo or motor are going to last. Daily dirt will destroy internals quick.
(You could change oil frequently yes, but still.. be sensible.)
Unless you just got money to burn I suppose.

Dude, just spend the $60-100 and get a J&R or BMC high flow re-usable.

J&R sold by IPD I belive and Viva Performance had the BMC last time I checked.
Or just pull the sock off. It is ONLY there for noise reduction. Most performance guys like to hear the whoosh of air when the turbo gets going.

sorry, I misread your title.
You can absolutely leave the cover off if you get some plumbers tape or something to hold down the front side of your filter. The lid actually keeps holds it down in place.
You will essentially be running a larger filter version of the BSR open air.

You will suck in hot air though, you may just want to augment the flow of air to the box with a supplemental CAI. That way you get a RAM air effect with only cool air. Couple of ideas on how to do those...

I removed the airbox cover and the sock was yes indeed only covering half the filter, and it was covering the front half of the filter (the back half towards the steering wheel was the open side). Does the sock sit in that position from the factory? It would make more sense if , to reduce noise, was covering the back half of the filter towards the actual intake to the motor....... Any logical explanation to this guys?? Just a thought.......

I imagine it has something to do with the keyhole airdam, the foam sock seems to be just long enough to cover that. Doesn't make sense why though.
Of course, the sock makes no sense. Install a high flow circular accordion paper filter , and then cover 60% of it . Seems the same haters of performance that designed IC, also got a vote on airfilter, and air scoop

Look at stock airscoop (under my CAI intake), it is only 8x1.5", but then it gets even smaller just inside lip, serious mistake for airflow IMO.
Contrast that with G35, which takes dual air intakes placeds directly in airflow to pick up 3 extra hp at 60 mph from ram-air effect.
