I recently found a speed shop that does very good work when it comes to tail light tinting, and the guy wants to make me a deal on it.
I really like the look of a car with smoked out tail lights, I just need to choose a style. However looking at the car, I noticed we have really nice stock lights too so that's why I'm making a poll.
Note that my car is black, and I have already tinted the windows, debadged it, and put on a black dubstop grille so you kind of know the look I'm going for.

Now on to the options.
#1, black on black with black and a side of black!

#2 Medium Smoke

#3 Leave the blinkers clear for a black on white theme

#4 Leave the lights red and smoke the blinkers

#5 and of course, our always attractive stock lights

If you are concerned about either the danger of someone rear ending me or the legality of it, please choose the "Tinting tail lights is dangerous / illegal" option, not the I think the stock lights look better option. I'll get the message.

Re: Tail light tinting poll (zerocover)

I voted for medium smoke partially because my car is black with the same tint on my taillights. It really gives the car an aggressive look and still let's the light show through quite a bit. In fact, when it's really bright outside, you can still see the red in the lights. However, I really like the blinkers being smoke only idea. I never thought about that. Good luck!
EDIT: it's not illegal in many states as long as the lights are visible from a certain distance. In TN, that distance is like 75 feet.

Re: Tail light tinting poll (Revolve40)

I'm not going to vote yet because I have to think it over some more, but I really like MachT5s tails (just the blinkers/reverse tinted), and I think on a black car they would look even better. Mine are kind of a mix of a couple of your options, I did about 3 coats on the red parts and one light coat on the blinker/reverse so it gave it a slight smoked look. Don't have any great pics, but here is one for the general idea:

I vote for my car (#4.) You can really only pull that off though if you have something dark to contrast with it (in example a black or graphite car.) The reason i smoked the blinkers is i thought it tied together well with the graphite down the center of my car. I just repainted the car though, so i went back to stock tails.

Re: Tail light tinting poll (Mach_T5)

Have to totally agree. It really depends on the cars color and what your scheme is. I went medium smoke on the tails with very very light smoke on the clears to tame them down. Purely because im not going with a blacked out theme but the red tails was to brilliant for my darker color scheme.

I love when the indicators are left untinted. That was my vote. Plus, it looks especially good on an S60. I just think the S40 has strange tailights, and the '08 facelift is 100% better.

So the tally stands 8 votes for Medium tint and 8 votes for leave blinkers clear.
You guys are no help at all
And I'm still torn between the two

Re: (zerocover)

What wheels do you have? I think that kind of plays into what would look best.

Re: (zerocover)

I voted the tinting tail lights is dangerous option, but I do also think it looks better clear. Hope the opinion helps.
Anyone know the ramifications of accident fault if you get rear-ended with tinted tail lights? Is that something a lawyer could spin against you and win? Might be something else to consider, but I'm no lawyer, so you're on your own.

I used to have tinted tails and got tired of getting pulled over all the time. Everytime I got pulled over, it's a tinted tails+ tinted windows ticket. Made me paranoid everytime a cop car's behind me.
So I'd say it's not worth it and keep it stock.
