T8 fuel economy - first impressions & battery efficiency

There's a lot to learn with the PHEV T8 and while I am not expecting the 2016 XC90 T8 to work like an electric vehicle I went with the T8 for the increased performance and economy. My daily commute should be mostly electric - but beyond that I'm eager to see what I'll realise economy wise.

Here's some data from a couple of trips I made today (03 Jan 2016). These were city/town (lower speeds, stop lights and stop signs) combined with country roads (there's a lot of elevation changes / grades). Its winter here in New England albeit warmer than normal and not with the usual amount of snow (nice!).

This data comes from my GPS plus some of the stats provided by the VOC (Volvo On Call) application. I'm assuming that some energy is consumed by keeping me and the car interior warm - and more energy is consumed for lights (night driving). How much - who knows ...

I also wonder if the electric performance will vary depending on the temperature of the battery ...

These numbers are a world above the typical 20 - 22 MPG I used to get with my 2013 XC90. But they're also under what various "ratings" have published (US and elsewhere). I guess that's where the saying YMMV comes from! :)

Here are my figures from this weekend:

Real world EV (Pure) only driving:

Fully charged battery showed 20 mile expected range when started journey

5.8 miles driven - 2.8 kWh used net = 2.07 miles per kWh (Total Range with this usage Est 14 miles)
16.3 miles driven - 5.6 kWH used net = 2.91 miles per kWh (Total Range with this usage Est 19.5 miles)

Trip 1: Driving was all on surface streets around Phoenix. Plenty of stop start traffic. I was being careful not to accelerate hard and trip in the gas engine.
Trip 2: Surface streets and 3 miles freeway. Less stop and go.

Here's what I get which is not so good, 8.7L to 100km on average over 277 in Paris. Having said that, my dealer told me that you only get proper fuel reading after 2 to 3 thousand km

How do you produce this report?
:) I culled the information from the Volvo On Call app on my Android phone and from personal GPS. Typed it up in notepad on my computer and posted with the code attribute to try to make it look nice / readable.

I'd say I get about 13-17 miles from full charge to empty. This is after 2 weeks of driving 95% all electric.

But that's not the whole story. This is not a Tesla.

I purposefully picked the T8 because i have a 6 mile drive to work, 12 mile round trip. I wanted to go all electric to work, but have the range to drive 400 miles on the weekend

The T8 is meeting those expectations.

190 miles to date, less than 0.5 gallon of gas used. Result.

Impressive indeed! I think I'm suffering up here in New England - getting less than that probably due to the cold temps.

That is impressive - similar to a friend who has been able to get 600+ MPG in his Chevy Volt.

Having driven the T8 drivetrain I'd have to say I disagree.

The way the T8 is set up, in either Pure or Hybrid mode you will be 100% electric unless you are a) on the highway doing > 70 mph or you floor the accelerator. Other than that the drivetrain stays in all electric mode until the battery is empty. Then it moves to gas. Braking regens the battery and extends the all electric mode.

Therefore, regardless of how you drive, if you drive on surface streets, you are all electric until the battery is empty. So MPG is not so much affected by driving style as it is by how far you have to drive.

Flooring the gas is part of driving style. :) Uphill road needs more battery. Regeneration on downhill road is never enough to cover the uphill road.
And stop-and-go traffic also matters as the mechanic brake may engage and lose energy on it.

Having driven it last week without any battery (could not charge it), I'd say it works better than a Prius. It will recharge enough after 1 mile or 2 to let you drive at less than 30mph for up to 1 mile or 2. Not so bad. Engine will stop at red light, and start gets done on batteries. Should be good to save fuel.

Not totally accurate - I find that with outdoor temps 20F / -10C the vehicle will start the engine in hybrid / pure modes even with a full battery charge. Next time I see reference to this in the manual I'll post that info here.

It turns on the engine a lot less / for a lot less time:

- when my car is in the garage (where the temp is well above freezing) and/or
- when I precondition the vehicle

Well, that's true as long as you drive in either Hybrid or Pure mode. On the motorway I normally switch over to Save-mode to reserve the battery energy for later (urban) use. You only have to take in to account NOT to switch to Save when the battery is below appr. 25%, because the petrol engine will charge the battery causing additional fuel consumption.

As I wrote before in my large review: For such a smart vehicle I don't understand we have to do the hybrid thinking :rolleyes:

It is definitely temperature related. Normal routine is to unlock car, unplug charging port, close port cover, get into vehicle, open garage door, turn vehicle on, drive out, close door, spend a minute getting organised for the drive (maybe nav route, music selection, etc.) For the days where the temp has been like -10C and below the engine starts - either in the driveway or shortly thereafter. (And I have not exceeded the point on the right-hand meter where it switches from electricity to fossil fuel drive.

This also happens when the vehicle has sat outside in well below freezing temps - even though the battery may be fully / nearly fully charged the gas (benzine) engine starts. I remember reading in the manual a brief mention of this behaviour ... wish they would elaborate more on what it is doing, what temps, etc.

Three trips today with the temp at or above freezing - that behaviour was not observed.

As a comparison, the Chevy Volt also starts its engine in cold weather (as do other plug-in hybrids). In late 2012, Chevy introduced a setting which allowed the driver to choose one of two temperatures at which the engine would kick on: Cold and Very Cold if I remember correctly. I think cold was around freezing and maybe very cold in the teens somewhere. A few folks in colder climates actually went so far as to disable the feature with an underhood hack involving a simple splice into the harness (I believe around the temp sensor). Hopefully, Volvo will introduce at least a software setting. I THINK Audi actually altered this on the A3 E-tron as the engine was kicking on a lot in Europe and maybe even Mitsubishi did the same with their Outlander PHEV.
