T8 charging slowed due to cold weather??

Dropped to the 20's here in NY today.. plugged in to the 220V Chargepoint at work and finding that it is only charging at 1.6kW instead of the normal ~3kW. Unplugged and switched charger and still doing the same thing. Would the cold weather limit the charging speed like that? I didn't see any warning messages on the dash.

Also noticed this morning in the cold, even after running ICE for a good 10 mins and then switching to Pure, it switched me back to Hybrid while waiting for about 5 mins in the Starbucks line.. is the T8 that sensitive to temperature or do I possibly have a faulty hybrid system?

Very odd... so I started preconditioning to see what that would do, and the charge rate actually went back up to normal.. I let that run for about 10 mins and turned it off and the charge rate went back down again....

Cannot speak to the slower charge rate in the cold. Almost all of my charging is done at home in a steady 50° F garage during the winter

As for unattended Pure to Hybrid switching, I have never experienced it.

What I have experienced are:
  • Any toggle on/off of Hold or Charge will cause Drive mode to switch from Pure to Hybrid at least for my MY16.
  • Pure or any other non-Hybrid setting will switch back to Hybrid if the ignition was shut off and turned back on (since Hybrid is the default).

Not too helpful but I have not experienced what you’re describing. Have you had any trouble with ineffective cabin heating or preconditioning while plugged in or while driving in electric? HVCH?

I only have 5 months/4k on the car and haven't had any cabin heating or HVCH issues.

Range is definitely sensitive to temperature (and sometimes the gauge for range is weird when it's cold). Got only 18 miles this morning at 20 degree in my V60. But recharged in 3 hours on the standard 240/16a charger. Never seen recharging problems with temp
Yea I totally get the loss of range.. Not sure what caused my drop in charge rate.. I'll see next time I plug in.

I don't know the specifics of Chargepoint or the Volvo battery management system, but I do know that the rate at which you can charge any battery is a function of its chemistry, and chemical processes slow down when cold. It's common knowledge that you will see reduced power output from an EV's batteries when cold (i.e., discharge). Charging is the same chemical process -- only going in the other direction.

Thus, reduced charge rate when cold is to be expected.

But why would the charge rate go up while I precondition?

According to the manual, if the Hybrid battery is below 10ÂşC or above 40ÂşC the "vehicle's functions may be reduced or not available at all." More from the manual:

I have charged below 10C (50F) with no issue before.. Just not this low in the 20's F before.. I guess I'll see how things go the rest of the winter.

My charging is started at night by a timer. Usually it takes less than 3hr. But I observed a few times VoC notification of fully charged is several hours late than usual. It is about 40F not very cold. Anyhow, I will let it be for now. Will have it checked up maybe in 6-7yr in case replacement is necessary.

I have watched lots of videos on full electric cars and their charging characteristics. The more sophisticated EV's definitely slow the charging when batteries are cold or even cool. Some will preheat the battery as you drive if you set your destination to a fast charger location to ensure the fastest possible charge rate. Makes sense that our hybrid batteries would exhibit the same characteristic in cold weather, but I have seen nothing that actually says that.

So I plugged in at work today after a 15 min drive with ICE running almost the whole time.. it is about 40 degrees this morning.. charging started slow again (~2.2kw) and it took about an hour to get to the max charging rate (3.2kw)..

Low 30's here today in NY.. After a remote start for 10 mins plus an all ICE 20-30 min drive, plugged in at work and it still took over an hour to reach full charging capacity.. on top of that, once fully charged, the range was a measly 16 miles compared to the normal 20 miles.

Where I live yesterday was the first cold day (26° F ) since getting our T8. I started the car (in Hybrid, as it does) and the ICE fired up immediately even though the battery was fully charged. It ran for about the first two miles at 40mph or less and then shut off. It usually runs on battery only throughout my in-town trips, so I figure this was intentional to get some lubrication going in case the ICE needed to kick in at a higher speed or under acceleration. Seems like a good idea in any case. BTW, my charging time did not seem to be much affected by the cold but I don't know how you see the kW numbers.

It was in the low teens today in NYC. Here’s the charge graph from my 2.5hr Chargepoint session… it definitely struggled to get up to full power.

Indeed I noted the same on my xc90 T8 it went to finish and than restarted to charge for another 2 minutes after it finish first time guess because is 0° CElsie’s outside?

To the OPs question - I charge on Chargepoint daily in Buffalo NY. Charging speed is not affected by weather, as far as I can tell. I had an XC90 T8. Now a hybrid X5. No difference with cold weather.

I see others are reporting that there is indeed a drop. I am not seeing it here. And I have been charging daily on Chargepoint for three years now at least while at work, outdoor - and it's Buffalo. So I got some cold weather.

Range, of course, is highly sensitive to temps.

My 2022 xc60 extended range charges very slow in cold temperatures. its been 20-30s degrees in my garage, and when i drive it, it depletes the battery 3 times as fast. I leave to work with around 30+ miles showing on electric motor, and after driving 10 miles there and back i end up at around 5 miles left. And that’s driving on Hybrid, not on Pure.
