T5 S70 Surprise

I was on the way home yesterday and an S70 with tint and an exhaust was behind me. I did the 'ole 6-to-4 drop with a blip and floored it. I pulled away from him, but not by a whole lot ( I couldn't lose him from sight), and we ran all the way up to....well....a high speed. I had no idea those cars could be so quick!

Actually some of the fastest volvos are 850/S70s

and then there some insane ones in sweden at 500-700+hp range

300whp is not that hard to get compared to the newer cars

I have a feeling he had at least a Stage III setup. Tiger will back me up, the hybrid turbo pulls like surprise buttsecks, and it's fast on the highway.
Re: T5 S70 Surprise (Edogg218)

He probobly didn't want to race he just wanted to give you a thumbs up or talk to you. Not having an R, most of us get excited to see an R in person, and would like to talk to the driver because most likely they could be an enthusiast.
Hmmmm

I only have 19t , ST 18psi , EST intake and 3"SS exhuast and with a Slipping clutch and 87 pump gas I put down 230whp and 290tourqe

There are alot faster S70 and 850 then me with out much more work .
Putt in Rods , IPD Tune and Garrett GTR35 and your over 320whp at 16psi

There is a few guys that have gotten 300whp with what I have but also had bottom end bulit , 93octane and a non slipping clutch lol

I knew they could be quick, but now I have a whole new respect for them.

I just can't seem to keep my foot out of the car...it's just so much fun, like a rollercoaster.

This is me EXACTLY? MPG? BAH!!! This thing sounds awesome and is such a fun driving experience for me, partly because it's a giant swedish station wagon.

I had a V70 T5 with a little bit of work and a manual tranny. That car was very quick, and surprised a lot of people.

What's more pleasing to me about this is that a Volvo driver decided he wanted to "play" a bit on the road with another one!! http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Re: T5 S70 Surprise (Edogg218)

I owned a '98 S70 T5 and it was a surprisingly fast car from 35MPH on. It was a bit of a dog off the line (not much worse than my '04 SR GT w the torque limiter) but she was definitely fun on the upper end.

One experience in particular that sticks out was while driving North on I-57 in Illinois towards Chicago. I'm doing roughly 70MPH in cruise and passing a semi on the left. I look in my mirror and see a red Lotus Espirit fly up on my tail. I leave it in cruise but prepare myself for the festivities I'm sure will shortly begin as the road is clear ahead.

Just as I pass the semi and have enough room to get back in the right lane, I do. The Lotus sees his opening and floors it...I oblige and do the same.
We end up running side by side all the way up to, well, up to a much larger number and when we both finally have to back off due to traffic, he looks over with a "what just happened" look on his face. I smile and give him a big http://********************/smile/emthup.gif as if to say "you've just been "volvo'ed".

I then glance over at my wife and notice she has the all to familiar look of "are you freaking kidding me" written all over her face. Maybe once we've been married 20 years she'll realize that man's right foot and brain are not always on the same wave length...

Not yet. This past fall, three of us with similar mods all put down around 275 AWD WHP and 280 AWD TQ with bolts-ons and stage II software. I want to make it back to the dyno at some point, just need to find an extra $75 and some time to drive to Worcester.

I thought the same thing. If I hadn't been in a hurry I would have tried to flag him down. We did wave, and I wanted to make sure he knew I wasn't a DB.

Re: T5 S70 Surprise (Bdubs)

Bdubs...too funny dude. I did this going up to Maine with my wife and daugher. An older guy in a conv. red vette with his trophy blonde wife hammered it out of a toll booth the same time I pulled out, so I hammered it too. Stayed with him the entire time, even nudged out in front of him in 3rd gear. I can see his wife hitting his shoulder to stop and he had that same "what's happening" look. My daughter was giggling, my wife shot me the same look you got, and I laughed.

all this with a Thule cargo carrier and 2 mountain bikes on the roof.

This is what I love about the sport wagon. You just can't beat the utility and performance. Nothing even comes close.
Re: T5 S70 Surprise (Edogg218)

Ask Needsdecaf how fast my 850R (same car) was?
He was driving my 06 Sonic and could barely keep up with me in the 850R

Well anything with enough $$$ and boost can be made stupid fast, there's an s2000 pushing over 700whp on stock motor/tranny/diff.
My old S70 T5 (modified) could have kept up with my stock R but it wouldn't stop or handle like an R.. ever.. one mod to the S60R my T5 would not even see the R.
