Folks,
I am a new member who has been lurking on this board for the past couple of weeks. I'm thinking about buying a used 2000 T5 and need help deciding whether or not to plunk down my hard earned cash for this baby. It's white , has 17K miles with a manual trans, and virtually no blemishes outside or in. Car seems to be in great shape from the pics, but I haven't driven it. Previous owner needed to part with it cause his new wife doesn't drive stick. Do you think $25,800 is a fair deal given the mileage and excellent condition? I'd be buying from a Volvo dealer.
Also, has anyone chipped any of these bad boys? How many extra horses can you get from the chipping?
Scott

well let me start off by saying welcome to the board scott. Second, S60 T5 ? 2000 ? The first production model was 2001. So there's aplace to start. Second of all I don't know if IPD has released the chip for the 60 series yet. If so it should give about 50 horspower. Rough estimate anyway, give or take 5hp. Now if it's a S70.............let us know

Scott,
Welcome to Swedespeed, glad to have you! $25,800 sounds fairly reasonable for a 2001 S60 T5, that is in excellent condition. The most important consideration would be to know how the owner treated the car, and if it is 'good', then you are looking at a nice buy. Make sure there is a documented service history as well. The S60's have different options also as far as the stereo systems and packages are concerned, so check those out as well. The previous owner has alread taken the biggest depreciation hit, so you should come out better in the end. The Volvo S60 never really had any initial quality problems like the S80 did, so you shouldn't worry too much about buying a first year introduction model. Also, the S60 has a lot of potential as far as chips and mods go, with the possibility of producing around 320 hp.
-Drew

Good advice, Drew. I didn't think of asking for the service history. And the complete options list would be an excellent thing to know. I'm hoping the car has the Sport Suspension option. I'll let you know what I find out today.
And 320hp would certainly be nothing to sneeze at!!

The Sport Suspension wasn't in the dealer's computerized ordering system for at least 6 months after the launch, so I'd be skeptical that the early 2001 had it. It might, but be sure and check.
Trouble is, al the car magazines had those early units without the sport suspension in the T5, so they downrated the car not knowing there was a better setup available in 6 months. Pure oversight on Volvo's part--you alsways need to get the best vehicle into the car magazine's hands or you don't rank as well.
One of the reasons I did the overseas delivery was because the sport suspension wasn't available in November last year (even to order in the USA) But it was available on the TDS delviery and TDS was cheaper, so I opted for that. I think at about the time I was to go pick up the car they'd managed to get the suspension option into the computer system.
But adding the bigger roll bars and different shocks are no big deal, especially if you're starting out at $26k.
S.A.M. Steffanssen will chip the ECU for about $625, but you have to send it to Sweden. They did e-mail me back and say their chip works just fine for the USA-spec emissions ECU. With simple air induction and the chip, expect about 300 hp. Tad more if you re-do the exhaust. Although someone mentioned the chip keeps the performance the same in the first 2 gears, but once you get into 3rd & above it's a rocket ship.
Good luck.

Thanks Dave. That's great information. From the board, I saw www.ms-design.com, www.kalmar-union.com, www.samsteffansson.se/samindex.html, as purveyors of V60 parts. Would you suggest any others?
I finally got the spec list from the dealer on this T5:
Stability Traction Control, Front Fog lights, CD & Cassette with eight speakers, Duel Zone Electronic Climate
Control, Power Seats driver and passenger, Homelink, Trip computer, Simulated Wood trim, Dash Drink holder, Michelin Pilots tires, Leather trimmed steering wheel, gearshift and parking break handle.
Gotta love the additional "parking break handle."
One other question for you T5 folks. How do you respond to the three complaints below from the autospeed reviewer:
1) "The ride is firm and the steering direct - albeit lacking in feel."
2) "Given its massive tyres, undoubted suspension complexity and ride firmness, its level of outright adhesion is poor."
3) "Its full-throttle power is delivered in a way which can be at the minimum be disconcerting - and at times border on dangerous."
Agree or disagree? If the statement is true, have you done any aftermarket buying to solve the problem(s)?
Scott

I ran a Carfax on this car, VIN YV1RS53D412001827, not that I was expecting any shenanigans. At least the Carfax report verified the cars history. I went to www.kellysbluebook.com to check out the value, but Kelly's did not have any value for any model 2001 S60. Maybe your source is different?
[This message has been edited by scotto (edited 12-07-2001).]

Well gents..looks like I'm committed! Today I sent off the myriad of signed forms, affidavits, waivers, down payment, and assorted fluid samples (err..maybe not that last one) to the dealer, so I should receive delivery of my beautiful used 2001 S60 T5 sometime next week!
So wish me luck! (And pray the delivery truck doesn't have an accident..)

Sounds like the dealer in Virginia with a black, manual T5 who copped an attitude with me last week when I wanted to negotiate the price. "Oh..we don't do that here." All I have to say to him is that he lost the sale!

Scotto,
Very cool video! I think that it is the first S60 owner video that I have seen. You might want to post it as a new topic in the S60 forums so more people will be able to check it out.
BTW, nice video editing skills.
-Drew

Thanks Drew. I used Adobe Premiere 6.0..great package. Took me a while to get the hang of it, but I knew what kind of result I wanted (MTV video-like), so that made it easier.

I will post it for folks to check out.

SAM should really get a corresponding dealer in the US to get more business. Sending an ECu overseas would just discourage a lot of people. Anyway, is a new exhaust necessary for an ECU upgrade? Is it fine without a new exhaust? Obviously it's recommended, but is it worth it just to keep the temperature down a few degrees?

I guess that depends on how hard you drive the car, or if you pull anything like Jet Skis. If you drive hard, I wouldn't mess with it and just buy the whole system. Plus, it's conservative sounding (i.e. doesn't drone) and adds 10hp.
BTW, there's a guy in another thread on modding, that says the SAM ECU is a Superchips one. I wonder if that is correct? If so, they may inadvertantly have US distribution.
