I have a 96 850R and am debating on replacing the stock turbo with a T3 or T3/04, or simply keeping the stock turbo and port/polishing it. From what I've heard, I can pick up a T3 for a couple hundred bucks, and then port and polish it for another couple hundred bucks or get a stock T3/04 for $600+. On top of this, I was told that I would get the same HP and performance increase either way...Does this make sense? If so, then why wouldn't I just go with the T3 instead of the the T3/04? Finally, if I port and polish my current turbo (unfortunately I'm not sure which Mitsu turbo came with the R), will that give me any kind of comparable gains as the T3 or T3/04?

First off, yes, you did sound like an a$$ in your post. I'm not offended though, even though you didn't answer any of my questions and went off on your own tangent. I do plan on upgrading the exhaust and the ECU, probably by IPD to do a custom job, hence the question about the turbo. I figured if I was going that route, I mind as well upgrade the turbo as well. As far as limits are concerned, I know that the 850 tranny will take about 300 - 320hp before things start to break, and with the three upgrades I plan on, I shouldn't hit much more than that, if I even get that high. I've researched quite a bit on the exhaust and chip, and someone suggested checking out the turbo upgrade as well, hence the post. Please remember, assumption is the mother of all F*** Ups.

Thanks for the additional replys guys. The logic behind getting an upgraded turbo was that if I were spending money on an ECU upgrade, I figured I mind as well have it done custom to my car's setup, and if I were to do that, I mind as well do all upgrades before the ECU. However, from what you guys are telling me about the $10k, I'm definately no longer thinking of the turbo upgrade. My goal was to get close to 300, and from what I can tell, the ECU and exhaust will only get me to ~280, or so I think. I guess either way, 280 from a volvo isn't too shabby.
