So, whats the difference between the two engines. They're the same basic 5 cylinder engine. What gives the R the 50 more hp; better computer tuning, different turbo, slightly changed engine set up, bigger air intake?
as you can see I dont know too much about the R, i have a t5

Re: t-5 vs R (T5atl)

It's a long list that starts with 0.2 litres more displacement, and bigger everything (turbo, intake, injectors, up-pipe, dual intercoolers, etc, etc....)
Test drive an R and you will switch! I did and I'm VERY HAPPY
LTA

i agree with Nebor. I have an R and a 99 S70 T5.
The T5 S70 probably is similar in terms of power/weight ratio to the current S60 T5. way different chassis...but similar power/weigyh.
my S70 has ONLY an exhaust system on it and it has gobs of power. my R is way faster, but my S70 is NO slouch. I really think if I chipped and added dp to my T5 it might beat the R. it's lighter and coudl make a lot of power with more bolt ons.
for overall sportiness - and getting more performance out of the box, the R is better.

You have to compare stock to stock. You can make a Scion quicker than the R if you want to.

They've given the T5 all of the R's goodies, with none of it's complexity or weight.

Whether it has all of the R's engine bay goodies or not (does it really?), it still begins its life 43hp weaker and with a 0-60 time of 7.3 seconds. As another said, let's hear about that first-hand experience. My guess is that your reflashed T5 beat a stock R with a geartronic or a driver who could not launch it properly.
- Tryg

Not only is the R at a 300lb deficit, but it's got a horribly programmed AWD system sapping it's power. Massive drivetrain loss compared to the T5. There are plenty of people here with Rs modded with turbo back exhaust and chips, and they still struggle for horsepower to the wheels. Whereas there are T5 members with the same mods putting nearly 290hp to the front wheels!
My experience was in freeway pulls with an S60 T5 versus an R, both similarly modified. The T5 would rapidly walk away from the R going from 50 on up.
Not to say the Rs are all slow. I had a run in with a black R built almost entirely of Svenske parts a while back here in Dallas, and that thing would move like a scalded cat.

There still is the traction part of course which gives the R it's edge but the added weight can be it's disadvantage also in certain situations.

Re: t-5 vs R (Johann)

The older S60/V70NT5 models need a 19T to get near the same level of tune btw.

Well Johann's chipped S60R was marginally faster on the highway than my 850, of course that was before i reached 5000rpm, after that my power went bye bye and he drove away somewhat comfortably Still i've only got 280 crank or so. A new model T-5 with a chip will go faster in a straight line than an R I believe, though the diff wont be huge. I dont think off the line it would be a slaughter either, the R isnt that launch happy
