I had a customer who really wanted the new style switchblade key. He bought a used fob on ebay. Unfortunately, the used fobs on ebay don't come with the proper codes to program them. So I figured out another way to make it work.
Initially, I thought is was a pointless modification, but eventually I caved and did it for myself.
I don't know if anybody is going to want to do this as a 'modification,' but if you need another key anyway, it does not cost a whole lot.
Here's what you need:
1. From ebay: Used fob
2. From dealer: New style key, cut , Software , Programming
3. Small screw driver for prying
4. Torx 8 driver
5. Small Phillips driver (maybe)
1. Here's the original key and remote

2. Unscrew

3. Pry apart

4. Take out the circuit board

5. Here's how everything looks apart

6. Here's the new fob from ebay

7. Pry off the battery cover

8. Unscrew the torx 8 screw

9. Slide the key apart from the fob

10. Here's the key seperated from the remote

11. Take out the board the same way, Here's everything apart

NOW, JUST SWAP THE REMOTE BOARDS, the old one fits exactly in new housing.
12. Here's the new style key dealer cut and programmed

13. All done:

As I said, it's kind of pointless. But if anybody wants to do it, it takes only about 5 minutes. You could also just buy the complete setup from your dealer, but that's huge money to buy a new remote and pay for programming. You can see my key was in bad shape (cover disintegrating) so I was going to be buying a key anyway.

Re: Switchblade key mod (dugums)

Nice, I had wondered about upgrading to a new style remote in the past.

Re: (Copeland)

I would like to swap my switchblade fey for a key/transmitter combo. Why anyone would want to go to a switchbalde is beyond me. Perhaps they like knocking the kneecap with dangling keys?

I personally think the switchblade key is cool. Does anyone know where I can buy one? I prefer a new one....but if I can't get that, a used one would be ok...

dugums...pm me if you want to get rid of an old style fob.
The switchblade key SUCKS! It ALWAYS opens in a back pocket and it is way too big.
I probably need to keep the two I have since my car is leased, but I don't really like putting my key in a front pocket.

Volvo Key FOB's are Water Proof!!

Just a note about Volvo FOB's: I went to Nashville this weekend and it was very hot. Got through taking most everything out of the car and put on my bathing suit to head to the pool. Towel was still in the car so I headed to the car once more before the pool. Got to the pool and jumped in, just to realize that my S70 Key FOB was in my swim suit pocket. Well, long story short, these FOB's have a rubber seal in them...none of the electronics got wet and my key FOB worked fine when I checked it later. When you do a mod, try to get the rubber seal tight around the inner enclosure. You never know when you might do something stupid like I did.

Re: (Barry)

Don''t know... The reason the other one worked so well is that the actual electronics inside were identical... That remote looks much different.

Dugums, if I may make a recommendation......
Where you state "4. Pry out the circuit board"
You might want to deter people from using the torx driver to "pry" the board out as this may do some damage. May I suggest you tell them to pull the rubber weatherproofing out with tweezers as this way will cause no damage to the board and allow it to come out with ease.
Re: (Copeland)

I get a discount at my dealer (because I work there) but it is not anything that somebody off the street couldn't get. Check to see if your dealer has parts or service coupons.
If you want to keep cheaper and haven't bought a fob yet, let me know. I probably have one I can grab for you.
