We've run a few news pieces today in this blog about Ford's road to recovery, and its use of the Volvo P2 platform also known as 'D3' in Ford speak. What cars do you think Ford should build with the Americanized version of the Volvo chassis component set. I'll leave poll option choices open, so if you think of a model, add it to the list.
Please, no anti-Ford suggestions. For good or for bad, Ford is part of the Volvo family now and their well-being assures Volvo's well-being. Plus, if you're American as 75% of our readership is, you can't help but root for the survivial and flourishing of this staple American corporation.
Here are a few options we came up with....
I voted for the Lincoln luxury coupe. Although I am no longer affiliated with a Volvo retailer, I would be totally against a Fordized version of the XC90 V8 as you can be sure that such car would definitely cannibalize the XC90 sales.
Yannis

Ford would do very well by enhancing the Freestyle (P2).
* Upgrade Engine from 3.0 liter to 3.5 liter
* Upgrade Transmission from CVT to 5 speed
* Add Stability Control !!!!!!!!!
* Install next higher grade of plastic for interior dash
Ford is afraid of taking sales away from the profitable Explorer. But now that Explorer sales have slowed due to high gas prices, it makes sense to consider bringing this vehicle up to the quality it should have been in the first place. For the money Ford is asking for this vehicle, the above upgrades should be included FOC.

Lincoln needs a new Continental, like the show car from a few years ago.
Lux coupe sales are in the tank.
Ford needs the Euro Foucus and the new Mondeo over here.
500 needs a facelift and the V8, call it a Galaxie 500.
Mercury needs to go away.

Mercury needs to go away.
I agree Max!...And George, that is not meant as an "anti-Ford" comment. It is meant as a "solid financial move" statement. If they are considering selling the losers in the product line...like Jaguar..they need to either give Mercury a total facelift and try to give it some pizazz....or drop it! Just my 2 cents of course Nothing deroggatory or "negatutative" ...that's southern for "crapped out negative attitude cause I ain't sold nothin today"

Mervcury will get a new version of the Freestyle--lucky them.
"Smaller than the Freestyle, the Edge is intended to appeal to shoppers who are tired of the poor performance and fuel economy of traditional SUVs. The five-seater Edge features a fully independent suspension, Ford’s new 3.5-liter V-6 with 250 horsepower, a six-speed automatic, and optional all-wheel drive—-base versions are front-wheel drive." Car & Driver 4/2006
However, upgrade the Freestyle or Edge too much and it will be nipping at the heels of the V70 or XC, and Mercury for that matter.

You know they've talked about a return of the Fairlane concept, basically a Freestyle with more emphasis on style. Frankly, if they'd just do a Fusion front end design on the Freestyle, some bigger wheels and a better engine, it'd be a really enticing package. Anyone remember the Freestyle concept car? That was actually VERY cool.

The same applies for the Ford 500.
Ford has to get their in-house Branding (Ford, Lincoln, Mercury), Platforms, and Price Points figured out.
Which cars are for drivers, which are for the rental fleets, etc. As long as Shareholders are FIRST and Customers are LAST, not much is going to change.
Perhaps Ford's suffers from mid-West thinking. Cars are subject to severe corrosion due to salt applied to roads in the Winter, so why spend any money on cars anyway. The pacing item is the rust on the outside. But not all of the US market lives in this severe Winter climate.
Ford's PAG Brands also need rationalizing, but to a lesser extent. This could mean selling some brands (i.e. Jaguar).

The German Capris of the '70s and Merkurs of the '80s made me think somebody at LM must have something on the ball. But they lost it in the '90s when they failed to import the Cosworth-engined AWD Scorpio. It's been downhill for them since then. They tried with the LS (a smidge of Jag content), but muffed it.
I guess if they have lost that little euro-spark for good, they should just "go away".
Estate, aero-retro styling - hint of 1948 wagon (especially the nose) updated to be lower/wider. Don't call it a 500, though ('50s namesake).
Eco model(s): 4cyl hybrid w/ much better CVT or clean diesel motor w/ 6spd man/5spd auto options (and tall overdrives). 7 pax options.
AWD/XC version - go crazy and make a lim-edition Woodie, for that matter.
Lim-edition GT/SVO model.
