Re: Swedespeed and Affiliate Site Comparo: XC60 vs. BMW X3 vs. Audi Q5 (GrecianVolvo)

As someone who just went through the process of looking at all three of these cars I have to say my order was Volvo, Audi, and maybe Lexus if only I really hated the other two. The BMW was not even in the running due to its box shape and it is showing its age. The Lexus in my view is also showing its age a bit even though it was "upgraded" this year.
Can't wait to pick up my XC60 in September.
John

A recent Car and Driver magazine article showed their test results of these three vehicles plus the Lexus RX350. They agreed that the BMW was a tired design that needed updating, but when their final ranking came in, they had the Audi as first, BMW second, Volvo third, and Lexus fourth. It doesn't seem like Volvo will ever get credibility with these automobile rags.

Having driven both the Q5 and XC60, I think they got the review spot on.
Not sure what they were thinking about placing the X3 second. But honestly, the Q5 is a very good vehicle.

They are most certainly very close, and the difference is down to individual preference.
Stu sums it up great here:

Quote, originally posted by [email protected] »

In a way, the Q5 and the XC60 almost complement one another. They weigh the same, measure closely in every direction, and even have the same starting prices (sort of.) But from there, they take different paths. While the Audi is conservative, yet upscale, and does its job quite well without a whole lot of driver involvement, the XC60 has an in-your-face exterior and, when spec’d right, an interior that’s doesn’t just get in your face, it punches you in the nose. Some people won’t like the two-tone leather, the less-is-more floating console, or the many textures. They should probably buy a Q5. But others will think it’s very cool, and as a vehicle, they’ll probably find the XC60 to be comforting, entertaining, and useful all at the same time. It’s fast but not exactly sporty and, as one would expect from a new Volvo, it’s very safety-oriented.
So that’s how they play out. Which one is best will likely depend on your own priorities and allegiances. Naturally, even our own staff would be pulled in different directions, with no single vehicle emerging as totally dominant in the group. A rematch to the death, however, may be in order once the new X3 is spawned.

The only thing that I want to point out is that these are all close in comparison and boils down to personal opinion. When they mentioned the Volvo having a higher fuel consumption than the others, they failed to mention that the Volvo is the only car that does NOT require premium fuel. Though most Swedespeeders would still utilize this grade of fuel, the buying public won't.

Yeah, but how much power do you get out of that engine on regular fuel.... not the rated power I can assure you.

I said you would not reach RATED power, not peak power. That means rated power over the whole powerband.
You are 100% correct in your analysis that you will be down in power but you can use more revs to overcome it. However I disagree that the usual driver will not feel the power loss. I feel it when my car retards timing because it is hot out. I would suspect most would if they lost 10% power as well. And I do not like having to rev the car harder to gain the power.
You might not, but I suspect that most notice. Not sure if they will care, but they will notice. Even my wife notices when the R cuts timing due to the heat, and she's not exactly an enthusiast....
