Swededemon 5

FYI.

Swededemon 5 is the reincarnation of Swededemon 2 or SD2 in a new body..

SD2 was an MY2000 Volvo S70T5, a former police car.

In about 3 years the car received a new new engine with stronger internals, At first a K24 turbo and later on a GT2871 turbo, a limited slip differential, KW coilover suspension Porsche front brakes with Volvo R 330 mm rotors, full stainless exhaust with race cat and most of the interior was removed and Sparco seats were added.

Besides the hobby for tuning etc, the car was also used at the German long distance race track the Nürburgring.

During this time I was driving a Volvo S60R as a daily driver and decided to trade this car for a C30T5 after which I visited the Nurburgring more often with this car. Although not officially white the color name was Cosmic white so the C30 got the nickname "SD3". After one and a half year the C30 was traded for a V70NN 2.5T, this time Ice White, which became "SD4" ...

Late last year a fellow Volvo freak who lives roughly a mile from where I live asked me if I wanted to sell the SD2. Problem was that we couldn't agree on a price because of all the parts added to the car, a thing we both knew before he asked me. Having driven 2 S60's myself I was also considering, at some point, to acquire an S60 again as a replacement for the S70. The S70 was a fast car but never really brought the excitement the SD1, a '97 Volvo 850T5, did.
So.. after asking the ball started rolling and I ran into a white former 2003 S60T5 police car.

I bought the S60T5 and I sold the S70.

Last picture of SD2,

With the sale we agreed that the engine and gearbox of the S70 and S60 would be swapped. Suspension, Sparco seats and exhaust were not included in the sale.
At that point the S70 was already sold, the S60 wasn't in yet but the S70 was sold with the S60's internals and delivery was set one week after receiving the S60 which gave me a 2 week window to get the S70 back up and running. This including adding a K24 turbo and a KW V3 suspension provided by the new owner.

After that the SD5 buildup was started.
The engine was already out and building up the car was pretty straightforward.

SD5 was born and the heart of SD2 lives on in SD5.

At the same time a V70R bumper shell was added with Radicast wiper hole covers integrated before painting the bumper,

All new inner bumper parts were used btw.

The headlights were taken apart and the black frames were painted silver,

A 3" Simons exhaust was added,

After that the car received Koni shocks and Eibach springs, the SD2's 18" Graphite Pegs, S60R front Brembo calipers and rotors and alignment was done,

After which the car looks like this,

VERY cool!!
Looks awesome man! So you're planning on running a K24 Turbo? Would you mind just going over all the engine work you're planning on doing? Forged Rods and Pistons? Which ones do you plan on using?

Damn I wish I could have a lap on the Ring.

Why don't you want to build an S60R? I mean FWD isn't the best for handling...
sweet! Rs are for people who like overheating rear diffs and replacing angle/bevel gears...

sort of kidding, sort of true. I still love Rs

Rs are a bit more expensive over that way..they aren't dirt cheap like they have become in the past year here..

I guess you misunderstood... The engine already received rods and pistons, in this case Cunningham rods and CP pistons. Compression is slightly lowered. Crank has been knife edged.
The turbo used to be K24, now a Garrett/ATP GT2871 T3 is added. Engine has been running that way in the S70 for the last year or so. 19+ psi at 7300 RPM.
Now in the S60 the engine still needs to be tuned. There's some tuned software version in the car but it isn't running optimal yet. Because of my other projects the S60 isn't my priority at the moment but I hope it will be better tuned this summer.

Well.. I don't think I agree with you on this one..

I have driven 2 R's. First a V70R, next an S60R. Both I have also driven at the Nürburgring but I must add that with the V70R I made the first laps over there and as a driver I have learned a lot after that so comparison is a bit flawed.

The R's are nice cars to drive on the Ring except for the 4C suspension. 4C can't be removed just like that because it is tied in to the car's electronics a lot. At some point it gets in the way and doesn't feel natural.
Also the R's are heavy.. I only drove both R's with full interior btw.

Here's a video of me driving the S60R at the ring,

With the FWD's I have driven faster and I had more fun because the cars were more of a challenge. Maybe an R without the electronics would be more fun, don't know.

Re: Swededemon 5 (Johann)

Very nice. What have you done to the tranny? Is this the one with the SPEC stage III and Quaife LSD?
Re: Swededemon 5 (VTT5)

Sent you a PM with a couple questions. Please let me know whenever you get a chance.. Thanks!

This one uses an AP Suretrac LSD.
Hey retarded question that I am almost 100% on the answer .

Was there any issues going from 99/00 car and putting it in the P2 ?

I cant see there being any since its the same engine in both cars but figured would ask anyhow.

There are considerable differences between the engine's and gearbox but the outside dimensions are the same as are most mounting points on the outside of the engine. Small detail differences and easy overlooked which also caused a problem in one case, cam sensor was ripped off the engine...

I left all the sensors with the respective models except for the coolant sensors from which I only swapped the connector on the loom. Only the bare engine's were changed. Motor and gearbox mounts were swapped. Electronic TB's were swapped which almost was a nogo because of the space left at the larger crank vent catch tank of the 2003 engine. This engine uses a smaller ETB compared to the '99 Magnetti Marelli "box". Came down to a couple of mm which turned out to be enough.

The cam sensor and housing of the 2003 engine is made of plastic instead of aluminum. I only swapped the sensor after which the cam sensor wheel sheered off the complete housing. Strangely enough not immediately but only after 15 minutes of running...

Turned out the plastic housing has 3 mm less sensor height at the mounting surface.. all in all it took ten minutes to repair using the aluminum housing but still.. ..

The S70 gearbox shifters use a pin , the S60 a ball for the cable connection. The small level can be exchanged without issues but the larger shifter can't be removed from the outside with the 99 gearbox, with the 2003 it can. The ball is screwed in, the pin is fixed so I drilled out the pin, added thread to the shifter and installed the ball. For the other box I fabricated a pin/stud with the correct thread. Not difficult but time consuming. If I didn't have access to the proper machining tools it would have been a lot harder to solve this issue.

Re: (Johann)

welkom terug in de S60 Johann, ik wist het dat je terug kwam.
verkeerde band-keus

1st "R" without AWD and 4C? you could drop it more than that

Is yours painted "polar white" or 'ice white"? (i did not like an S60 in ice white when it left factory).

Re: (JARMO)

Still investigating a real coilover suspension so for the time being I went with the trusted Eibach/Koni combo. Maybe it is because of the white color the car doesn't appear that low but it is about the same height as my former S60R. Color is not Ice white, at least it has a yellow hue to it.

And the tires, they have performed well under P2 cars.
Where's the orange?
Love the white colour.
Given the choice, white would be the preference!
Re: (SML)

I would definitely recommend the QBM strut bar for your car! It's absolutely beautiful.
