There have been comments that the HU-803 has much better sound/bass than the HU-850 which replaced it in 2005.
Having just picked up my new 06, I am (hear) to tell you that is definitely true. The factory sticker on my 06 has the stereo listed at 4X25 watts per channel
WTF?? I could have sworn my 04 said it was 325 watts total
So can I take the two cars to an audio shop and have them switch the amps to the 2 units?? Any knowledgable imput is greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Jim

the hu-850 is 325 watts. better check the label on the unit itself inside the car. if the window sticker says 4x25 its because someone is a goof and didn't properly check the equipment

I wonder how I check the label on the unit for the power output? So the units should have the same power rating, but there is definitely a difference in the bass response. I guess I just have to save up for the sub woofer.
Thanks,
Jim

Re: Swap the amp from a HU-803 to the HU-850. Can it be done? (surfsd)

Assuming you have the Premium Sound in the 2006, it should be a "marketed" 325 watt system.
Volvo, like all other manufacturers, takes some liberal license in this specification.
The underseat amp is 4x75 watts or if you take some liberties you call this 300 watts.
The head unit, HU-850 in this case drives the center channel, and that is rated at 25 watts, and uses no external amplifier.
If you sum these, you come up with the market speak of 325 watts!
The truth of the matter in regard to the external amplifier under the seat is that it will go into high temp cutoff if played at anywhere near these output levels for extended periods.
If you have NAV., you can not deliver 25 watts to the 3x5 center channel speaker without severe cone break-up. I can not speak for the none NAV speaker.
In terms of the lack of bass, that is a function of the head unit, not the amplifier. A perfect amplifier is a piece of wire with gain, no "equalization".
I too have the HU-850 and had the HU-803 before, and there clearly is a difference. I believe it is in the loudness contour, which is used to emphasize the lower frequencies at lower volume due to human hearing characteristics. The emphasis is diminished at higher volumes. It was right in the 803 and not enough in the 850, at least in my mind. You can verify this by cranking up the 850 in volume and then it indeed does provide enough bass, but then too loud, and/or the underseat amp cuts out.
I have given up trying to explain this to Volvo, and it is compounded by the fact that it appears that some HU-850s indeed have a proper loudness contour and sound fine.
Botttom line, don't bother changing the amps, I suspect they are even the same part number.

Also check you have 13 speakers. Mine was a "premium package" but with parcel shelf speakers deleted (not by me). Strangely this is an option!!! Not that I know why anyone would pay for premium and then omit the 2 largest speakers (200mm dia.)??? I am fighting Volvo (with success) on this configuration.

I count 11 speakers. 1 in dash, 2 below in each front door, 1 above each front door, 1 below each rear door and the 2 in the very back of the wagon. As previously noted, if it is turned up, the bass response is good. I just didn't crank it up with the wife in the car on the drive home Anyways, all is well, I just need to get use to a couple of small differences in the 2 model years.
Thanks guys,
Jim

Re: Swap the amp from a HU-803 to the HU-850. Can it be done? (rogersampson)

Hi rogersampson,
Your response to surfsd's query is very clear thanks.
I also recently switched from an HU-803 to an HU-850 and the low end in the 850 is nothing like it was in the 803. I agree with you that it's a simple matter of the loudness contour and I also agree that the small centre channel speaker for those with NAV is not as good as without NAV. Also, I expereienced the thermal shutdown with my HU-803 system twice. It was after about 25 minutes of high levels with lots of bass and yes, the centre channel stayed on prooving it's not run by the amp under the seat!
I will join the fight to get Volvo to fix the very poorly tuned HU-850. Before I sold my 2002 T5 I took some C-weighted SPL dB readings and created a spectrum analysis graph (see my here http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=41614. I intend to do the same in my 2006 with the HU-850 and post the results.
In the mean time here is very simple comparison: In my HU-803 I keep the bass and treble flat (at the centre click) and sometimes had to turn it down. I got comments from passengers like "where is the subwoofer in this car", "wow, this stock stereo is unbelieveable". In my HU-850 I keep the bass cranked to the max and for most music it's almost adequate at high volume levels (at low levels, like when my 3.5 and 6 year old are in the car it is NOT adequate).
Can please suggest who at Volvo I should send my spectrum analsys graphs to?
LTA
