I have a 2004 S60R with 17" pegs and just under 18K miles. The car has always felt about as smooth as my old Radio Flyer red wagon. That is to say, it rides like a rock. Lately, I've noticed what feels like looseness somewhere in the suspension or in the steering system. Here is what I'm experiencing:
- Hitting bumps or small road imperfections generates a loud impact noise and sends shockwaves through the car as if I had hit a much larger bump or pothole. This happens in all three suspension settings, but it does feel a little smoother in sport mode and smoother still in comfort mode.
- When I pull to a stop, I often hear and feel a slight "clunk" (sorry, that's the best term I can come up with at 8pm on a Friday). When I start accelerating again, I hear and feel it again. I also feel an ever-so-slight shutter through the steering column at the same time. It's very noticeable when I am riding the clutch on an incline - there is a knock when I engage the clutch and again when I let off the clutch. Last but not least, it happens when I pull to a stop and then throw it in reverse.
- When I turn onto the small ramp that leads into the parking garage where I work, the steering wheel jerks to the side when the first wheel makes contact with the ramp.
- I would also swear that the steering feels heavier than normal.
- The car also wanders wildly over uneven surfaces, which I have always blamed on the infamous Rosso's (the tires are quickly turning into racing slicks and will be replaced shortly).
Does this sound out of character for the S60R? Possibly a loose connection or worn bushing? For what it's worth, the tires seem to be wearing evenly. I am hoping to have this addressed as a warranty item during the next oil change. My dealer, Sandberg NW, tends to give me the "our tech didn't find any problems" run around, so I want to be sure to ask the right questions. Any feedback or advice from the forum would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance - Tryg
I also have an infrequent backfire that occurs between shifts that I will address in a separate post. I do love my car, but it certainly has some issues that need to be sorted out.

Re: Suspension woes in '04 S60R - Feels and sounds as if something is loose (RainyS60R)

The first issue sounds like normal 4C quirkiness although if it's drastically different from what you've been experiencing before, then there might be something wrong.
The second issue sounds like the axle pinging that some of us get. I have it and have had it for a really long time but nothing seems to worsen. There apparently is a fix for it but there have been stories of it reoccuring so I never bothered with it.
The wandering over uneven surfaces are probably due to the Rossos wearing down. How much tread is left? When mine were almost done, the car tracked every little uneven surface pretty badly. A new set of tires fixed that problem.
It sounds like you have something else going on with the other issues. More knowledgeable members chime in!

Regarding the "clunk", it could be the notorious axle ping. However, I tend to think that aside from the axle ping issue, these cars have some play in the driveline, or driveline lash if you will, that will always be there no matter what you do. I have had the axle ping issue addressed twice now and I still get the occasional miscellaneous clunk from time to time, under certain circumstances that unfortunately is the nature of the beast, IMHO.
I do think your car would benefit from a new set of rubber and alignment, however.

The big "bang" you experienc through sudden road imperfection is just part of the Volvo experience but will be mitigated with the following corrective actions.
1 - Have your dealership look @ the upper engine mount - it is probably cracked and should be replaced under warranty.
2 - Your clunk sounds like it may be more of the dreaded "axle ping". Very niticable between stop and blip throttle roll as well as 1st to reverse shifts. This is another known warranty issue and should be addressed by your dealer.
3 & 4 - Sterering issues (heavy feel and "jerking") are probably associated with tire wear. After you get new rubber get a 4 wheel alignment - the R geometry is quite susceptable to getting out of tolerance easily.
5 - I would chalk up most of the "wandering" to your PZeros which @ 18k miles are probably close to their end of life. The more they wear, the worse they ride.
As for the backfire - that is the bonus! Cool huh? (dont freak it is totally normal with ouR caRs)

Rainy, it could be a number of things. I had similar symptoms, which I've posted in prior threads, but to save you time, here's a combination of what others suggested, and what turned out to be my issues:
Big noise: no suggestions
Clunk: likely the axle spline. there are a few fixes for this. Mine was glued at 7K miles and is ok now. Others have had to have repeat treatments and/or updated remedies. There's a TNN on this. Don't have it handy, but if you go to V70R.com and go to the TNN thread (one of the first ones listed), you'll find it easy.
Clunk: could also be a combination of bad shocks, worn link rods (connects sway bar to strut), bad/broken spring seat. My issue was a bad strut. Replaced under warranty. This also caused my left front tire to go out of round, the steering wheel to shimmy, and the car to wander.
Wheel "jerk", car wandering: Could be related to the problem above.
My issue took several visits to resolve, so my advice is to be perseverent with your dealer, and insist on taking a test drive with the Technician and/or service manager so that you can point these things out.
Good luck
