So I strongly did not believe that I have been getting only 20MPG. So I, like many of you ran a test. Filled my tank at 111080 and drove to 111480, that's 400 miles for those of you that cannot do math, with still some gas left in the car (25miles til' an empty tank) probably about 2 or so gallons...Tempted to let it run down to 5 miles left for a more accurate reading as I have gone about 80 miles between when it said 50 miles til' an empty tank and now...

Did the math out and roughly calculated to following results:

I assume there is roughly about

Now keep in mind about 200 of these miles were driven at roughly 70-80mph driving up to camp this weekend....keeping fairly consistent with the speed of traffic of course.

However, with my spirited driving recently due to the install of my Eibach springs and attempting to push them to their limits I was surprised to see these values. I don't quite understand how the on board computer is getting barely this value.

There is a much easier and more accurate way to do this.

Fill car.
Reset trip odometer.
Refill car.
See how many miles you went and divide that by the amount of gallons on your fill up.

See, I still haven't filled up yet. So I wanna drive home once more, go golfing, and then fill up and that mileage will be most accurate after fillup!

avg speed was 68. Filled up, reset trip, immediately got onto highway with cruise @ 76mph. That was mid-missouri headed up I44 on the way to Chicago.

I drove from SoCal to Portland and back. I did 2 WOT highway runs touching 130mph and 140+mph along the way. And I did a few spirited runs through some back roads. Total miles was just over 2000 miles. And my average was 26.8 by the time I got to IPD's Garage Sale (half way mark)

I did 480 miles on one tank 3 weeks after I got the R. I just recently did a trip to Boston and did 460 miles on one tank. Mind you all highway
On average, I probably get 16-19 MPG driving around town.

I have done 495 miles on one tank in my S40 (first gen)

I've filled my car up completely from the low fuel warning light and still only put 12.8 gallons in it -- does it have one hell of a reserve or something?
Last time I checked me and my father were on the assumption that the reserve tank was about 2-4 gallons in size. Been a long time since that conversation though.

In my 2006, when the fuel warning light gooes on...I have about 2 gallons of fuel or 40+ miles in the tank.

When my distance to empty goes to ZERO -- I have 1 gallon or about 20 miles that i can go in a pinch

i drive by like 80 gas stations on the 17 mile ride home from work. So I push it to these limits often. I usually fill up when the -- zero miles to empty comes on....and the car takes about 17.2 gallons. we have about an 18.5 gallon capacity if you include the filler neck.

I will say this.... if you have been doing a lot of highway driving, you range to empty can be off. thats because it averages your last 40 miles or so fuel econamy. Thats how you an have 20 MTE showing, park the car, and then have it say ZERO the next day when you start it up.

I do that drive 4 or 5 times a year from St. Louis to NW Arkansas and back on I-44. Best I can do is 27 for that stretch. Between rolla and lebanon has some major elevation change.

My best is 553 miles in my 05 SR. My average during that trip got up to almost 40 mpg from 25 or so after an hour...it leveled off still over 30.

I am currently getting 26.8 avg with 35 miles one way to work and 75% highway.

I got this for a total of just over 1000 miles from Austin TX to Fort Collins CO. I did some spirited driving a couple times but for the most part it was just crusing at roughly 75-80
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/colovolvo/7639615674/" title="Untitled by colovolvo, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8430/7639615674_b1b0cdf050_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="Untitled"></a>

And after doing the actual math after each fill up, it came out to be like 29.9 MPG so it seemed to me that the computer wasnt all that far off. After a long distance that is though

Have you ever had any problems with your fuel pump?

30.4 was the highest I have gotten on a 5 hour trip going about 70 the whole way.

Mine stays around 24 driving around everyday though.

Got 33.4 mpg (according to the computer, which always seems to be at least 1 mpg high) when I drove home for my wedding. Total trip was 490 miles from Logan Utah to Greeley Colorado and is 75% interstate (75,mph) and 25% highway (65mph). I stopped when my lady needed to fill her mazda 3 so I didn't have an accurate amount of gas the I used. I figure I got this mpg because I was semi-drafting her (I played the 1.5 second rule) and she actually drives the speed limit, no more, some less :(

I'm averaging about 27.6 MPG per tank. I do about 85% highway driving and 15% city driving, using 93 octane.

As someone posted, you guys should be using fuelly.com to track your MPG's.

I am averaging about 21 or so in the VR. And like 17-18 in the turbo BMW.
