How do I connect a Volvo subwoofer to my HU650?
The car is an 05 XC70. It is NOT prewired for the subwoofer. The P (?) pillers (between the front and rear doors) do not have speakers. I only have speakers in the front and rear doors. I have already wired in an Ipod adapter and bluetooth.
There are two green male plugs at the base of the passenger side A piller. One is larger than the other. Are these for speakers?
HELP! I already bought the sub !
TIA, again.
Ozzie

Re: Subwoofer and HU650 Connection ?'s (Ozzie)

Did the sub come with the wiring harness too? You should be able to make the power connections using the standard harness. The sub is usuall connected in-line with the d-pillar speakers for the audio. It shouldn't be too difficult to adapt it to the rear door speakers. I'm almost positive that the plugs you identified are not speaker connections.
I can send you a copy of the speaker wiring diagram for your car if you want.

Jack
Please send the wiring diagram.
There is no dedicated SW connection cable in my 05 XC70. I do find two green speaker connectors, under the REM, that go to the d-pillars (rear hatch pillars). Yesterday, Volvo techs thought that the SW connector cables may plug into the two connectors going to the d-pillar speakers in the same way that the BT connector connects to the back of the HU speaker connection.
I have ordered the SW connector and will see what they look like. I could use some help and/or directions with connecting the SW power and on/off switch wire. If anyone has the install instructions, please share. If I get them, I will scan them, put them into a PDF file, and post it.
The saga continues. At least the IPOD and escort work.
Ozzie

Re: Subwoofer and HU650 Connection ?'s (Ozzie)

I almost shelled out $600+ for the Volvo sub. Then I had a crazy idea. Maybe the Kenwood unit that was $150 would work. Imagine that! The Kenwood fits nicely in the accessories tray (instead of replacing it) and connects easily to the rear speaker wires. The performance is terrific. The Volvo unit has one 10' speaker and an integrated 150 watt amp. The Kenwood has 2 8" units and 150 watts. This system isn't what you want if you mean to vibrate the next guy's windows at a stop light, but it does a wonderful job of extending the audio spectrum into the "audiophile" range. This is especially important in a wagon where the teeny rear pillar speakers replace those on the rear shelf of a sedan. Of course, you will want to do other mods to the stock system, but this provides a lot of kick at a very low cost. You will need to do a little wiring. Very elementary, and the hot post is already there on your fuse block. Feel free to contact me if you need some pointers.

Two quick questions: Which Kenwood unit are you referring to, and will this fit in the an 04 XC70? Okay three questions, how much wiring was involved? Thanks!

1. Kenwood KSC-SW1. Cost was around $150-160, brand new, delivered.
2. I think all V series gen II wagons have the same cargo area setup, so all (US) wagons 01-06 should be about the same as far as wiring and space.
Here's a pic of my setup.

3. As for wiring, you want to find a good place to connect to your rear speaker leads. I pulled back some of the plastic molding on the rear posts to guarantee that I was attaching to speaker wires. I used a simple barrel clip. In addition to inputs, you will need to run a hot lead to the fuse box - very easy. And, the post is already in place. The system needs to be grounded, but there are a number of good grounding points in the cargo area. The only hangup I had was trying to find an accessory lead on the rear fusebox. If I had checked this forum first, I might have found an answer. Instead, I just ran a lead to the front box and found an open lead that worked perfectly. I wanted to route the remote control up front anyway. It is a small box that lets you adjust sub volume and crossover frequency at will.
Hope this answers your questions.
Good luck. It's well worth the effort.

Re: Subwoofer and HU650 Connection ?'s (hjpress)

When I saw what was involved with the factory sub, I too started looking into these powered subwoofers. But I was unsure if the speaker wires to the D-Pillar speakers in the rear of my 2004 v70 were already crossed or frequency limited. Do you know?
Also what does the dealership computer change to the head unit do other than turn on the subwoofer? Does it also change the EQ of the rest of the speakers?
Great photos. I think once I clear up these questions I too will get one. But what of the inch of plywood over the speaker. Subs are not directional but can you hear this stuck away beneath a floor and carpet?
