Alright, it's kinda goofy looking, but have you guys looked at the WRX? AWD, turbocharged 220hp, and you can get it in a wagon all for about $22K. That's a heck of a deal.

There is no denying that it is one heck of a deal, that is for sure. I plan on test driving a WRX soon. I will report on it, once I get a chance. I really hope the Mitsubishi takes a hard look at the WRX and brings the EVO VII stateside. I like the EVO VII overall better than the WRX, but they are two very sweet cars.
-Drew

No, the car is certainly not perfect, though Subaru has a potent combo of power, awd and rigid chassis. Beyond that, refinement and design are crap from what I've seen.
I actually liked the recent generation Legacy and Impreza, though the current versions of them look like an oversized Civic (Legacy) and a goofy Neon clone (Impreza).

I spent 7 years with Subaru. Do you know what it was like trying to sell GL10 wagons for 20K in 88? Lemme tell you it was an uphill battle . I was with them in all the bad years. Kudos to them for finally coming stateside with this car. Its a heckava car for 24K. They could have picked a better yellow though (not that ours is great).

I just drove one yesterday. Humada humada humada. What a machine. I am truley embaressed showing someone an S40, knowing that that car is out there. The best Subie since the SVX. Scary fast. I know a bunch of Subie dealers and on up in the Pocono region has delivered 2...both are in his body shop. Too much power for too little of a driver.

That's kinda funny. Much like the early 911 turbos. Many were wrecked on the first day.
I'm very curious and want to take a test drive of one soon. I like Scoob a lot. The Legacy RS 2.5 old bodystyle is a great buy for what it is. Now if I could just retrofit that new turbo motor in cheaply.
And, if I could just turn ifs and buts into candy and nuts we'd all have a merry Christmas.

I want one, however the price is kinda steep... I'm sticking with my 740

I agree with everyone on the fact that the WRX is a very quick, and responsive car. I drove one about 2 months ago, and liked everything about the way in which it drove. As for the looks, ground effects, can cure that very quickly. If I didn't have my 850, I'd get the WRX, but the 850 can't be beat from a 30 to 110 stretch...

Anyway, back on topic, I have a friend..well, more like aquaintance, that has a new WRX. He's a machanic at a Subaru dealer. Before the temp plates were off he had $4k in mods on that car. APEXi boost controller, full 3" mandrel bent exhaust from the turbo back with hi-flo cats, intake, short shifter, and some other stuff (I forget exactly). He claims to be (and I've ridden in the car and agree) pushing about 300hp and 1/4 mile times in the low 13-second range.

Wow, this topic is back from the dead...
I was surprised that the WRX didn't do so well in the Car "Performance Car of the Year" competition (12/01 issue). It was the middle of the class in price, and about the middle on overall performance. Problems included enjoyment at low speeds, too much understeer, and less grip than the M3 or Evo VII. Much like the Civic Type-R in the "hot hatch" category, the WRX was a bit too high strung for everyday driving. 243HP from 1994cc makes for a fast car, but not necessarily an enjoyable one to drive at less than track speeds.
BTW, they tested the Subaru Impreza UK300, which is a limited edition version of the WRX (£26,595, 1994cc 16V Turbo Flat Four, 243BHP, 261LB-FT torque, 5spd manual, 4-wheel drive, 5.4sec 0-62MPH, 143MPH, 20.5MPG).

I don’t know... so far I've only seen the WRX peg two demographics thus far. I have seen either "little boys" and "old men" driving the car. Seems to me the car is good for those fighting an identity crisis or tight budget. I drove one not too long ago. The steering wheel is way too big, the interior is cheap and ratty, and the power to the ground is nice but unstable. I see this car as being nothing more than a 24K death trap and a menace to the road. After-all, what is the car built for anyhow!? It comes with a friggin 1-year membership to the SCCA. Now everyone who has one will automatically think they're a racecar driver. Sorry, but I think the car is a bad idea. Most Americans can't drive slow...now they're going to try it going faster. IMHO they need to forego the SCCA membership and replace it with life insurance!
Just my bitter $.02 worth.
Prospero
