I know this is not the place for it...but from the mouth of a 35-year old husband and father of two...street racing is stupid.
I was tempted last Wednesday by some hillbilly in a large confererate-stickered truck. Needless to say, I cut between two cars by a matter of feet on the highway going over 100 mph.
This car is misleadingly fast (especially at higher speeds) and I was mere seconds away from leaving my spouse (and possibly others) widowed.
Just a reminder....STREET RACING IS FOOLISH! (Off my soapbox)

Re: Stupid, stupid, stupid! (Eric_H)

I highly doubt you were able to make that move under 4000 RPM .
Seriously, in the infamous words of some country song I fail to remember the title of "I want a man who drives a fast car ... slow"
High horsepower cars got me into a lot of trouble in my youth, but as you correctly point out, they could have killed me. Racing to 55 from a stoplight is one thing, but the kind of high-speed stuff you are talking about is downright dangerous. Please be careful.

Re: Stupid, stupid, stupid! (Quick Brick)

Yep Quick...you are soooo correct.
I went from a 'poop (will be edited) and giggles' type feeling to an 'oh my lord, how stupid, dangerous, and illegal did I just act?'
I do think the sonic blue along with just having a sportier car than my LS really gave me an attitude. When I think of it, I had been driving at least 10 mph above the speed limit all last week.
This is a fun car, but it is waaaaaay too nice to total for 5 seconds of ego-building.
Don't worry, from now on, I will have more of a 'why would I bother racing you' type attitude.

I see the way you're starting your NEW R will be seeing the inside of a body shop real soon.
On the other hand it may be YOU, seeing the inside of the county jail

You're right and wrong, but mostly right.
Street racing is not inherently stupid, and it can be illegal.
However, STUPID street racing is stupid.
The Grok guide to street racing:
Never endanger anyone, including yourself.
Never race on a street that is unsafe.
Unsafe means lots of things, line of sight, debris, traction, etc.
Never race stupid people.
Never race an obvious win or loss. There's no point, its not fun or even satisfying.
I raced an M3 the other night on the interstate. We both waited until we had clear LOS, two clear lanes, no traffic, and in the 3 runs we backed off when the winner was determined.
"Legal" is another matter. Legality varies by province, even mile-by-mile. Speed laws are obscure as well. But that's a discussion for another forum, another time.
Glad you survived your brain fart. Now set some rules for yourself.
One more thing, if you join your local autocross chapter of SCCA, you can get your "hot driving" fix once or twice a month, plus you get to compete against other good drivers and make some friends too.

Re: Stupid, stupid, stupid! (Mk1Racer)

street racing is illegal and if you do it you'll eventually get nailed.
i do agree, however, there is stupid street racing and then there is STUPID street racing. If i see two cars take off from a stop light, no cars around, in a low traveled area, only going up to 55mph or so - big deal.
When I see those little punk you know whats zig zagging through busy freeway traffic, causing countless near miss collisions, just so they can see who's POS Civic/Focus/Etc is faster - I get IRATE.

Now you're at the track, what are the conditions? Clear road, nobody in harm's way, you're taking safety precautions. What makes street racing "inherently stupid" in your definition. Spell it out, we'll break it down. Getting out of bed is inherently stupid if we apply your arguments thus far.

A US jurisdiction, that of the United States, pretty much means The District of Columbia (the only place you will find United States Citizens -- everywhere else in the continental US you have American citizens), and federal reserve lands within states borders. So is 23109 the vehicle code of the US, or of all 50 state codes, or all 50000 county/city codes? What about other nations? Indeed, then if street racing is inherently stupid because of its legality, then it would need to be illegal everywhere for the statement to have merit. But what I wanted to argue was whether street racing was inherently stupid, not whether it was legal or not in this or that county, province, or nation. This forum has a good number of intelligent people with which to hold such a discussion.

Eric, Good for you for stepping up and admitting a mistake. I think many out there could learn a thing or two about that. As someone who has seen a sibling and friends die too young, I can say that it simply isn't worth it. Take care.
