Can't believe this. I got the dreaded check engine light today. I left home and it wasn't on. Stopped off at Starbucks and got back in the car and it was on. And NO, I didn't just get gas so it's not the gas cap. What a pain in the @#$. Now I have to make a trip to the dealership which isn't convenient when you work all day and they're only open late one evening and never open on Saturday.

Does IPD sell that? Is it "safe" for us to turn off the CEL? I assume it comes with lists of codes that tell you what's wrong.

sounds like a plan, but i think i d leave the codes alone...let the dealer fault trace them

Generic OBDII scanners return generic OBDII codes, which are the "compliance" version of the real codes thrown. If you reset them, you risk losing the detail data that the dealer needs. Those codes are read only with Volvo equipment.
Also, be warned most generic scanners read only engine codes. There are many, many other codes in the car in the other systems.
Bottom line, read 'em but don't clear 'em unless you truly want to.
Tom.

Re: Stupid CEL on already at only 1200 miles (soledoc)

soledoc, my LDP (leak detection pump) went at about 3200 miles. Set off the check engine light just like yours. This may or may not be your problem but with the consistency of problems these cars seem to have, I would guess Volvo got a bad batch of these things and will just keep installing them until they run out .
If you are going to the dealer anyway and haven't had the software upgrade for the temp gauge and "no boost" issue, make sure they do it at the same time ... mine did .

Re: Stupid CEL on already at only 1200 miles (Quick Brick)

Good idea. I'll just "fib a little" and tell them I'm getting some poor boost when I hit the gas and see if they'll give me the software upgrade for the temp gauge. Is that what I should tell them or what exactly should I say to get that upgrade?
I'll also just also ask them to replace the useless bracket and install the safety cable.
Thanks for the info about the leak detection pump.

You can ask, but it is really simple to DIY.

Why does it have to be like this? If it's a known problem, but maybe not seen at that particular dealer, why can't it be done in a less "hush hush" way?

And you definitely don't want to erase it, if you want a Volvo tech to do the fixing.
Tom.

Re: Stupid CEL on already at only 1200 miles (tmtalpey)

Just got the car back. It was just the emissions evap leak...probably from the gas cap even though it was tight (I checked). He didn't give me any details. All it says on my receipt is ECM6436B and FP #30677021-5. The tech said the system is so sensitive even a slight bit of air in there will trip the CEL. I asked them to update the software which they did.
They also installed the exhaust bracket....for a whopping $8.10!

Re: (R_Rated)

Does one actually need a VCT to accurately pull the codes on thier own? Just curious, because if I were to purchase a scanner would it be of much use to trully diagnose the fault? Thanks
Kevin

The FP number is a common ECU reflash, you received an update for emissions control that was released a while back. It's performance-neutral and a good one to have.
KVB-R, an ordinary code scanner would have returned a useful error in this case. Probably it would have read out P04<something> evap system error, and you could figure it was a loose cap, and also reset the error.
The ECM43<something> is the Volvo detail version as I described above.
Tom.

that P/N 30677021-5 is the 145 recall software update -- that was directly related to the gas cap codes

Re: Stupid CEL on already at only 1200 miles (blf)

Correct. It actually fixes a problem in the evaporative purge system, not the leak detection however.
Tom.
