I am assuming that by U-turns you don't mean the jug handles that NJ is littered with and that it is a full-lock turn. This is most likely tire rub. It is especially prevalent if you have the 18" wheels. Your options are to have the steering stops adjusted, but that will increase your turning radius, or just bring the steering wheel to full lock.

i get a weird sound when i make u turns and have to turn the steering wheel all the way one way or the other. is this the axle problem? or is this something normal on the R?

If it's a rubbing / scuffing / grinding sound, that's just the stock R 'rubbin. Wheras in NASCAR, rubbin' is racin', in the R, rubbin' is turnin'

Either live with it or take it to the dealer and have the steering stops adjusted. Easy peasy, and it won't take off much from the already monstrous turning radius.

dang. they made a car that rubs stock. nice. never thought that would ever happen.

i guess i'll deal with it. don't want any bigger of a turning radius than it is now.

When you say deal with it, remember that if deal with it means backing off on the wheel to avoid the scrub, you're increasing your turning radius and accomplish the same thing the steering stop adjustment would do.

Obviously, whatever your prefrence is, but I found it easier to make the adjustment and adapt. It already sucks anyway.

I love Eric's boat pictures...they're always too appropriate. After 6 months, I still yell at the car pulling into a space. So does my wife. It's funny / sad.

Could be your steering fluid is a low and the pump is making noise. My car used to 'groan' at full lock... the dealer replaced original hose clamps with new improved ones and the problem has never reoccurred.

i'm gonna see if the dealer will do this adjustment for me. they seem to be pretty anal about doing work for me.
The Volvo Store (I assume) being anal,
you've got to be kidding.
They couldn't even figure out how to put my S60 (lowered) on the lift to do an oil change when on a trip.
Totally incompetent.
God forbid they find a block of wood

I have the same problem with my s80. Turn your wheels all the way in one direction and see if there is noticeable rubbing then turn them the other way etc.

And for everyone who says their R cant make u-turns, its just as bad in the s80. I have found that the easiest way to do one such turn is to get a tad bit of acceleration and yank and that hand brake. Should slide you right around
haha
