95 855 N/A 189.3K miles 5 speed.

I start the car (cold or hot). I'm still not moving, parking brake is set, and the trans is in neutral. Wait till idle goes to it's normal idle speed (few seconds).
Then I press the brake pedal and immediately hear a buzzing/whirring/roaring/rumbling noise coming from engine area somewhere. It does not go away as I keep pushing the brake pedal. It keeps rumbling. The noise would go away if I release the brake pedal (e-brake set). I replace a brake booster hose and checked a one-way vacuum valve that attaches to the brake booster. The noise is still there.

Here are my questions: Am i the only one getting this noise? What is this noise, or, rather, what could it be and where could it be coming from? If it's not normal then what should I check to make it go away. I've read that sometimes abs pump maybe causing such noise. Would it mean that the pump is faulty and needs attention or it it perfectly normal and should be left alone.

BTW, none such thing is present on my 95 944T AUTO.

Are you sure it's not coming from your shifter console? I mean, do you have someone outside listening?

It might just be the shifter release solenoid going bad or something. Try pushing the shiftlock override button and see if it makes the same noise. (I'm not sure if the button is electronic or not on your car).

It's a manual transmission (5 speed), so not shiftlock release button.

It sounds to me like its your ABS system is flipping out. This is not a normal sound for your car.

Have you had your ABS module rebuilt yet. I say "yet" because it will fail, its just a matter of time.

Do you have TRACS? Try disabling it and see if the sound continues.

Did a "quick" ABS check.
Mine does not have the 96-97 ABS module like Victor Rocha has in his pictures.
It's an old fashioned ABS from 93-95 I suppose.
So I pulled the ABS fuse and sure enough I get the same noise.
Also I had my wife press on the brake pedal while I was out listening to the engine bay noises. Surprisingly, I did not here any major changes in noise level in engine bay (all that noise, but still), but in the cabin I could hear this low not too loud rumbling noise.

Still have no clue. I have a spare brake booster from the JY which I could try to change out to see if it's the problem. Or else, I should go and talk to my indie Volvo mechanic.

ps. still could be abs, but I would not have the "know-how" to check for it, other than pulling the fuse
