Does anyone have the SAFE-GUARD protection for their R. This is a program where a alphanumeric code is etched into all windows of the car. They are quite small and almost undetectable unless you go looking for them. This code is entered into a nationwide police database such that if your car is stolen and subsequentlty found by the police they can use this code to lookup in the data base to find the legitimate owner.
This program also provides up to $5,000 payable to owner if car is deemed lost for ever. The program is also transferable to new owner(s) during its term period which can be as long as 5 years.
My questions are
1) has anyone had their car stolen while protected with SAFE-GUARD
2) was it found by police and you notified via the code lookup process
3) if not found how was the $5,000 payback handled if at all

Re: Stolen car and SAFE-GUARD (barrysharp)

I had this on the last car... it's kind of a waist because you can't see the numbers unless you look at the window right. All it does is turn away a professional theif from taking the car, because they will have to replace all the windows to sell the car. It won't deter a beginner theif that's going to grab the car and strip a few items out.
Personally Barry... I installed the Lo-Jack system and I think that's the way to go. They also have the same type of pay off if your car isn't returned... just not as high.
So to your questions
1)Yes (2001 Civic SX2)
2)No... Never made it out of the underground parking structure. Cops looked up Vin and Plate number
3)n/a

I have it on my car. Previous owner had it instaled. The numbers are visible, but you have to look for them... they're right by the normal etching on the windows. Fortunately, I still have the car, though, I haven't checked my garage this morning yet...

I have to agree no one steals Volvos.
Not only that but our cars have specially cut keys with chips in them that prevent theives from just jamming a screwdriver ( or any long thin object) into the steering cylinder and starting the car.
Plus those of us with sticks are even more protected because most joyriders ( which is why most cars are stolen) don't know how to operate a manual transmission.
A few years ago I had a case where a victim was carjacked..gun put in his face, and told to give up the car...defendant got in saw it was stick, and just as quickly got out and ran away.

Re: Stolen car and SAFE-GUARD (barrysharp)

I did a ride along with the Glendale Police department in California. I asked her about lo-jack and she said that most police cars do not have the receivers. And those that have them do not work. I am unsure on other police agencies. Someone told me that police departments are required to have a certain number of lo jack receivers per number of cars (unsure of the number), but I haven't been able to confirm that.
The latest rage around my area is stealing the tailgates off of pick up trucks like the Toyota Tundras, which I have.

Re: Stolen car and SAFE-GUARD (barrysharp)

The VIN numbers are etched on the glass of all our Hondas, it kinda comes with them but you need to pay a fee to "activate" the system. We always refused to pay, it's not like they remove the numbers, and they will at least discourage anyone from selling the glass. Thieves are probably more interested in the airbags and sheetmetal, anyway. Burglars are discouraged by home alarm signs and stickers and "Beware of the Dog" signs, it doesn't matter if you have an alarm or dog or not.
No self-respecting gangstah would ever be cought dead in a Volvo.
No, I wouldn't bother, and I wouldn't bother with Lo-Jack either since I don't want the car back after it's been trashed.

Re: Stolen car and SAFE-GUARD (barrysharp)

The thing is if you car is wanted by a pro then it will be gone even with Lojack. A car that is being shopped for can be removed from the area even before the owner knows its gone. This is particularly true if you live in a metro area with major port or live near the border. Lots of stolen cars in Texas end up in Mexico. Even if recovered by the Police in Mexico it is virtually impossible to get it back. The other thing about Lojack is that personaly I would not want the car back after it has been lifted. Who knows what they did in it.
I struggled with this when I bought my Vette. I decided against the Lojack and use a advanced Alpine aftermarket alarm. The factory one is crap. I just to make it too hard to steal and the thief will look for easier pickings.
I also agree with the statements above on the fact I have never heard anyone getting their Volva jacked. Maybe that is one of the reasons the quote I just got for insurance on the R I am buying was way lower than I expected.

Re: Stolen car and SAFE-GUARD (Gonbad)

Lo jack thieves utilize a technique called a cooling off period. They steal the car, and park it in a parking lot or similar for a few days. If the cops don't track it down, then most likely there is no lo jack.
See my thread "How to protect your car and your family"

He repoed one on a friday and left it in his warehouse over the weekend. The police had a hard time tracking it because it was a metal building, but they did show up about an hour after he rolled it out on Monday.
I've installed a kill switch in my sunroof relay on my last 2 cars. That has stopped the theifs from ever getting it out of the garage. Both times they hammered a screw driver into the lock to try to get it to turn over... then broke the look off the steering colomn so they could turn the wheel. Both events costed me 2 days of work and about 1500 to have the bent colomn and lock replaced.
JRL is pretty much right that the Volvo is unappealing to the average car theif. I looked at the Lo-Jack as a system that it might or might not be a guarentee, but it's a nice discount on my monthly insurance that's almost paid for the system. Another year and it will be just money in return.

They might not be appealing to the average thief but they are to the average policeman. V70 T5s are the most popular police patrol vehicles in the UK.
There's quite a market in ex-police cars.
