my 1999 S70 T5 has a problem wih the AC. it blows nice and cold..but it seems like when I adjust the temp...it usually happens when i make it WARMER...or if I turn the AC off...i get this stale smell coming into the car.
it's not there all the time.
the dealer suggested i change the cabin filter. but i don't know if that iwllh help..the smell isnt' there all the time...
it's a stale smell...my wife thinks it's a chemical smell....hard to descibe..it's not dusty smelling....i dont' know what it is.
anyone else expeience this or have any guesses? when i make the thermostat go warmer, or turn off the AC, i wonder if some vent is adjusting, and i'm getting air routed inside the cabin from some part of the AC that may have something trapped in it?
maybe some way to flush the systme out? or clean the vent system?

Re: Stinky AC smell - any ideas to fix? (23109VC)

It's mold, bacteria and all sorts of other nasty things
There's a product called Fridgee Fresh (or an equivilent) You vacuum out the intake, spray a couple of times with this stuff and add a new cabin filter.
It may smell like bleach for a couple of days, then nothing.
(I just did this to my 850R and it smells new)

Not on my car but the first time I smelled it I thought I was at a Krispy Kreme Donuts.

are you saying it's the heater core maybe? isn't that a major PITA to get to and clean or replace?
could it be antifreeze? how would that smell get into the AC system?

If it's the A/C, it's the A/C
If your heat is on then it's the heater

Re: (ljjones)

My A/C was also stinky before I got the evaporator replaced. That solved my problem. Although I still have the problem (occasionally) with the flashing orange/green lights on the A/C control....but that doesn't affect the smell any more.
On this subject, is it worth it to upgrade the air filter? IPD sells one I know. Easy install?

Soledoc- that's the air-intake filter for your engine...not the cabin filter. If you want to upgrade the cabin filter, get the one that is charcoal activated. It DOES take out more odors. In terms of the K&N, we use it in both of our cars...slightly noticeable in regards to a little more umph...I think better air flow to the intake. Just don't over-oil it when you need to do maitenance on it. In fact, I only oil the underside. It comes pre-oiled so for your first use you don't have to do anything but just pop it in. The oil is a concern for the MAF which sits just next to the airbox...don't want to mess this sensor up- it's expensive to replace (upward of $200).

Re: (MadeInJapan)

I just found this problem on my '98 V70 T5 last night. So from what I gather:
* It's not an antifreeze smell
* Core isn't bad
* The smell comes anytime air of any kind is pushed through the system
* Cabin air filter... highly doubtful.
Isn't there some type of water release valve that expells the condensed water that collects from the A/C? Maybe that's clogged and that would account for the stanky, moldy-water smell.
yep...it releases from under the evaporator. It could be clogged. You can use a coat hanger from under the car to unclog it.

Re: (23109VC)

Thought you could reach it under the car...I was wrong. Things are in the way. Here, this should help: http://www.volvospeed.com/vs_f....html
And this:
http://www.volvospeed.com/vs_f....html
