Point me to a thread if one already exists. I did a quick check but didn't see one. The car is in the shop for several items, looking for a quick response to cut the dealer off at the pass.
2004 S60R
ISSUE: while driving at constant speeds or putting around town the stereo volume and balance jump around. Only happens while listening to AM/FM. I can set it at a good level, then 5 minutes later, instead of all speakers playing at one volume, only the front right, or rear left speaker will be pushing sound.
It isn't the car adjusting volume to match speed (if it even has that) nor do I believe it is a wavering signal strength. It happens while I am sitting perfectly still by myself at a red light.
The dealer is also saying that the stereo doesn't work properly on the Dolby setting for AM/FM. For AM/FM, it should be set to 3 channel.
It all sounds like BS to me, but want to confirm with those who may have dealt with this before. When they called and gave me an update, they informed me the reason above. Hoping to get a bit of ammo before they call back.
Oh, and they told me it would be $260 for the AC software upgrade and $25 to flash the program controlling the front passenger window which isn't operating properly. When I asked about the warranty covering it, she didn't know the Volvo warranty was purchased through them. Not excited about the service after the first 6 months with the shop in Colorado Springs.

Re: Stereo volume / balance randomly changes (Needsdecaf)

Well, CaptainObvious, radio reception might not be the best for PLII, but it will still work (just not sound the 'best' that it could).
It's either the head unit itself or the amp. Do you have a center speaker, and if so, what is that doing? If it's joined in the festivities, it's definitely your HU.

Re: Stereo volume / balance randomly changes (Needsdecaf)

The issue with the A/C is that when driving (steady, traffic, etc) the temp will be set at 70. The A/C will jump in temp + / - by 10 degrees out of the blue. Suddenly hot, suddenly cold, then back to what feels like it might be close to 70. We had a hot day out a month ago and the A/C on 64, blowing warm air. So warm, I had to have the windows down and it was in the 90s.
They say that a software update and recalibration is needed. The issue is the damper motors for the A/C vent doors need to be recalibrated so they know fully opened and close positions. The tech says it is a 2 step process of recalibrating the doors and updating the software to remember the positions (my version of the several explanations I was given).
And that the Volvo certified preowned warranty doesn't cover software upgrades???

Re: Stereo volume / balance randomly changes (AthruC)

What is PLII?
The stereo sounds okay, but I admittedly am not an audiophile. I do know the difference between music using reverb and echoes vs all of the sound going into one speaker. Espically when a song's chorus is not consistent from one verse to the next. I am not talking about clarity, when it gets quiet, it will go from a comfortable volume level to barely being able to hear the music. I usually have to turn the volume back up. Then it will get quiet and go from surround sound all the way into one speaker. That usually returns to normal on its own. On a 45 minute drive to Denver, it will do this 4 - 6 times if I am paying attention to it.
Does the 3-channel sound setting have a center speaker? I was informed that it shouldn't be on Dolby surround if listening to AM/FM. Car is at the shop, I can't go tinker and listen.

Like I said, it sounds like a bunch of BS, but I wanted to run it through the people who are not looking to do work for a profit. Especially a $250 software upload.

Magoon...where's the recalibration thread? (I should just sticky it).

Doesn't the recalibration just consist of turning the dials all the way to cold... then all the way to hot... ?

I think the service writer may be thinking of an upgrade, or update, such as a change in features or a later version of SUM SW installed at your request.
I see your situation as different. You are not asking for any upgrade, you are not asking to be enriched beyond what you previously had. Your A/C is not working properly and they need to replace, fix, or whatever it takes to resore it to it's original operating condition. If that means they must load SW in order to "fix" it, than that is their choice, "just fix it", to it's original operating condition, UNDER WARRANTY!
