Stepped process for installation of upgrades?

Stepped process for installation?

I am planning on getting a few mods for a late birthday present to myself and I was wondering if I could lean on the wisdom of the community on installation advice. Will I be able to install all my mods at the same time? If not, which should I install in what order, and how long should I test the car out between installations?
And I will be getting the 37k mile maintenance before doing any mods...

I am getting the following:
iPd softloader hardware/software for ECU
Evolve 3.5" downpipe
Evolve Sport Exhaust system
iPd R CAI kit
Bell FMIC kit
Aquamist water injection kit

I am keeping the stock turbo and I don't plan on manually modifying boost pressure any time in the near future. With that in mind, I am wondering an FMIC or the aquamist water injection kit are overkill. The summers here are in the 70s-80s.

Thanks!

FMIC is awesome.

Your aquamist is a nice add on, but in Portland it could be a bit excessive. Id rather spend that on swaybars.

Thanks!

You can't do that anyway.

Welcome!

Suggest you spend some time in the Master Modification list which is part of the stickied FAQ thread up top (not the beta one, which looks good but is under construction).

Would think twice about a 3.5" DP in combination with IPD's tune. I can't say for certain that there will be issues, but there HAVE been issues in the past running a "stage one" tune with an aftermarket downpipe (3"). Running a 3.5" DP on a tune which is not designed for it may be risky.

I'm just speculating on this point.

Would definitely do the CAI if you are adding that much draw on your intake.

FMIC is a huge gain.

IPD is IPD not iPd

If you're buying a product learn their initials (name)

Bell FMIC kit
#1, THIS WORKS WELL AND WILL GIVE YOU MORE CONSTANT POWER IN ALL SEASONS, NOT JUST WINTER WITH NO HP FALL OFF IN SUMMER. NECESSARY IN ANY AMBIENT TEMPERATURE OVER 65-70 DEGREES.

#2
IPD softloader hardware/software for ECU

#3
Evolve 3.5" downpipe
Evolve Sport Exhaust system

YOU SHOULD DO THESE TOGETHER. PERSONALLY I LIKE IPD'S DP, NOT SURE OF ANY EVOLVE PRODUCTS ANYMORE
THE SAME WITH THE EXHAUST. THE DP WILL GIVE MORE POWER THAN THE EXHAUST, WHICH IS GOOD FOR ONLY ABOUT 4-6 HP WHEN COMBINED WITH A DP AND A TUNE

Last
IPD R CAI kit

Aquamist water injection kit
COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY IF YOU HAVE THE FMIC

So, 3.5 is too big, eh? I was looking at the Phuzzy DP on another thread, went to their site, and noticed the Phuzzy power package. The Phuzzy and Bell FMICs are different dimensions. Also, I noticed the Phuzzy intercooler doesn't have mounting brackets. Anyone have comments about performance/installation comparisons? Google search revealed nothing.
Re: Stepped process for installation? (chrizzis)

there r lots of people on here that can comment as to the phMIC.. I've read only great things

One can understand ipd or IPD but why would anyone go out of their way to write iPd?

A company's name earns the same respect and spelling as your own name

Sorry about that,
I just saw the logo on their website, which -- at a quick glance, looked like iPd, but after analyzing it, I guess the "p" is lower cased as well. Sorry to ruin your day with that. I hope the rest of your day is better for you after reading my apology.

I would do the following order:

- IPD R CAI kit
- Downpipe (probably not Evolve) 3" is fine
- Catback exhaust (also probably not Evolve)
- FMIC (PhMIC for me)
- IPD softloader

As said before Aquamist may be overkill.
My order of mods would be:

1. Filter
2. FMIC/CAI
3. Exhaust + DP
4. Software

Get a Stage 2 Tune...IPD is the way I'd go. I prefer getting the tune last because you can tell them exactly what mods you have on your car, and they'll custom fit your tune and engine map to those mods.

As said above, Aquamist is way overkill in your climate.

I just guess things like that dont bother me much.

GET THE TUNE LAST! If you don't you will have to go back and pay more for a different tune to work with your mods. Yes, it takes patience, but it will save you money in the end.
Re: Stepped process for installation? (JRL)

Seems to me your spending a chunk of $$ on this thing!!
All of Evolve's stuff is pretty expensive, no? Are you putting this stuff on for a target HP range, or just to say you have all of it? Just curious...

I didn't even think they made a 3.5" DP for these cars. That does seem like overkill. You're not running a giant diesel powerstroke here.

And I agree with M3nt0s on the upgrade sequence.

For crap's sake, why would you even think this was a halfway decent thing to say to someone?

Re: Stepped process for installation? (T5 for Life)

I was going with Evolve because I read a thread saying something about the Evolve exhaust giving better numbers -- but, of course I can't find it now.

T5 for Life: I wasn't going for a target HP. You know how, after owning a car for awhile, it feels like something is wrong with it -- maybe there is a boost leak or something, but then, after giving it a tune up you realize you are just getting used to it's performance? It doesn't thrill as much when I romp on the pedal. I am just getting used to the car now and it would please me if it would accelerate faster. I still want to maintain driveability and reliability, as well as maintain the 'just turn the key and drive' ability, and I figured these mods would be up to that limit.

I am going with the Phuzz DP and FMIC kit. Still in the air about which cat-back to get. And no Aquamist will save me some $. Thanks for the advice!

m3nt0s: when you mentioned filter, I assumed you were referring to a K&N?

chrizzis nice list of choices! and jRl why are you such a stickler for the little stuff. Also the iPd stickers that came with my CAI were spelled just like that "iPd". Does it really matter, come on lighten up, it's members like you who make me stay away from this side of the forum.
Re: Stepped process for installation? (chrizzis)

And I think I know why JRL was annoyed. I'm sure he will correct me if I'm wrong...
I think he was grouping me in with the genX-ers who like to skew their caps/lower cases when they type/IM -- which I wasn't. I actually thought that was how it was spelled due to a quick glance at their logo. I noticed some others on this forum came to the same same conclusion while reading other threads.
