Which would you prefer? Quite the dilemma...
P.S. Please note that I'm aware of existing adapters, but pretend that the one I need doesn't exist (which it don't). The whole point of my poll was to determine how important the steering wheel audio control is to people...

Re: Steering wheel audio vs. Aftermarket head unit (darylkaiser30)

Couldn't you do both?
I know for other car manufacturers, you can have both.
You can do both!
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=PAC+SWI-X
Edit: Damn it! Maybe not. I can't find anywhere that it is or is not compatible with Volvos.

This is a faulted poll - it is based on a lack of knowledge of the existence of these products.
There ARE adapters to connect steering wheels controls for common aftermaket headunits (Apline, Kenwood, etc) for the Volvo S60, V70, XC 70, XC 90.
Here are pictures from my installation in my S60.
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=55892
see dietz.biz for manufacturer info specific to your headunit.
and a few places to buy the parts in this thread
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=57279

My apologies for not being clear in my initial poll options. I know there are several adapters for various aftermarket decks, but not the one I want to install (Sony MEX-1GP). My question should ask: if you could only have the stock deck with steering wheel audio controls OR an aftermarket deck W/O steering wheel audio, which one would you prefer?

Oh, I see. Well definately the aftermarket deck then.
I mean why live with the Volvo deck when you can have Reverse cam, iPod, DVD, Navigation, XM radio, and much better quality speakers all for less than the price of Volvo's Factory NAV option.

I upgraded my speakers already, but the Volvo HU-650 only has 100W total power and not many extra features. I was considering the HU-850, but they want $1200 plus install. Not worth it. I can put in a way better deck myself for less than half that. Besides, Metra makes a pretty slick DIN kit for the 2005 S60/V70 that matches the dash almost seamlessly. Anyway, thanks for your input and I appreciate everyone's opinion on the matter!
