Hi all...
Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Joe & I own a 1999 V70R. For the past 2 years, I've been working on my VW B5 & have neglected to do anything to my Volvo. However, now that the warrantee is up, I want to get started on my second project... So forgive the "newbie-ness" but here we go:
[*] I want to start working on the suspension first. It's a bit too squishy for me. IS there a coilover application for the V70R? I have KW V1 coils on my Passat & wanted the same type of set up here (fully ride & height adjustable)?
[*] Also looking to get some larger wheels. What is the V70R's bolt patter & offset?
[*] Chip tuning: Any recomandations? Aside from ipd, are there any other tuners out there? I know Garrett & Wett can do some custom programming, but anyone got an "affordable" option out there?
[*] What kind of turbo resides in this beast? (I realize I should know this, please dont flame me ) I just want to see if a turbo upgrade is somehting I can look into down the line.
[*] I know ipd makes a bolt on exhaust, but at $895, it a bit pricey for me. Are there any other bolt on resources out there? Or should I just got get one custom bent for me?
[*] Anyone know where I can get a dual pod guage for the A-pillar?
[*] HAs anyone done any work on upgrading their intercooler?
Sorry for the battery of questions. I just want to start on the right foot. Thanks in advance.

Wow, that is a lot of questions!!!
I'll do what i can to help out, but i'm sure you'll be getting more than just me to butt in!!!
1) The suspension options that are available are pretty much the normal, choose springs, choose shocks etc... I have HEARD of a few people trying to buy custom Ohlins coilovers for their 70 series, but you're not gonna like the price tag with those biatches!!!
2)Don't know the offset or bolt pattern off hand, but i know that BBS, VOLK and many other great looking wheels fit these cars, i would say go 17's for performance/comfort, but 18's could probably fit if you don't go over 7.5 wide.
3) Chip tuning~~~ Look into GIAC chips, Wetterauer, Heico Sportiv and BSR. I've heard that GIAC and BSR are the way to go for agressiveness, and they of course warranty their WORK on the ecu. IPD is really stable and the bonus of no soldering, but you are getting middle of the road performance program.
4)your turbo is a 16T i believe, if you had the 2000 V70R you would have a 19T and a crap load more bonuses too. The 16T can be polished, upgraded, clipped etc.. to flow better and give more high end power.
5)The ipd exhaust is a good, good system, but i just got a full system, all mandrel bent stainless steel for 860, and i got to choose what i wanted to go in. It includes a new 2.5 dp, cat, straightpipe, muffler (dynomax) and ipd tip. Go custom, that way you get more power, a downpipe, and can probably do twin port with the downpipe for a grand or less (GOOD DEAL).
6)For the dual pod, go to summitracing.com, they'll have a dual pod, i'm not sure how it'll look, or what color, but they'll have some.
7)I know of nobody that has done the intercooler except for Carlos with his S40. his website is http://www.classiccats.cc
Enjoy, hopefully i've been of some help,

You'd have to special order them and have RAYS custom drilled them for you.

About the rims for the V70..check www.tirerack.com...they have a great wheel fitment guide..you can actually see the available rims on a pick of your car. Also try www.tires.com...but the selection is smaller (and no pic of car). I think the offset is the same as the "regular" 850/V70's, 5 x 108 mm i believe.
BTW..is this an AWD R? if so...the suspension choices may be limited due to the AWD system. Good luck.
Tony
[This message has been edited by T5 for Life (edited 03-31-2002).]

I have the 2000R and have done the ipd ecu upgrade along with the ipd dual exhaust. The ecu upgrade was pretty amazing although the results with the '99 may be a little less dramatic as the 2000 extra goodies include the 19T and larger injectors. The car is a beast when you rile it but very sedate at day to day driving. I nearly went with the GIAC chip upgrade but I have been pleased with the ipd gear. The 2000 had stock exhaust but the ipd dual breathes freer and the car goes effortlessly.
Those big cans look great too and the exhaust note under load is great.
I will be looking for some suspension tweaks myself and thus far ipd seems tough to beat...I'll likely do sway bars and strut tower brace and go to 17" wheels. I believe that the 99 like the 2000 is 5 x 108 and 35mm offset. I really like the volvo offerings but they are cost prohibitive The Titans look great but are $450 and up. I almost forgot to mention Wastegate adjustment...a couple of turns and the turbo spools now at about 2400 and comes on like a maniac. Lag wasa a big problem with all stock R AWD 98-2000 so this helps quite a lot. Next would be custom dp...The nice thing about the ECU upgrade is the consistent and safe boost control...I don't have boost gauge but have been told by ipd that boost is about 18 psi
What color is your R?
Have fun with it...The R is a great all arounder and an upgraded R is a Wolf in Sheep's clothing
Jim
quote:
Originally posted by BoeserBlick:
Hi all...
Just wanted to introduce myself. Thanks for all the great responses so far! This is great. It is the AWD-"R". When we bought the '99 model, we hadn't realized the 2000 one would be so different. Can anyone else elaborate further on the differences? 246 to 261 seems preety substantial for a rolling change. To mind, the VW 1.8T gained 20bhp (150 to 170) within a year as well. Would a turbo upgrade be too much for this 5-banger to handle? I wonder how hard a retrofit would be. I had access to a T28 turbo a while back... hmmm.. *creative juices are flowing*... What do you think would go into a retrofit to the 19T? Bigger injectors? new FPR? more powerful fuel pump? strengthend rods?
Sorry for the bevy of queries... BUt I'm all psyched now. I love the fact that the R is such a "different" tunable car... A true "sleeper" except to the enthusiast.
I'll likely talk to GIAC about the chip. I've used other GIAC chips before for KO3 & KO4 apps. I agree Garrett Lim is a top notch chip tuner.
I'll also likely go custom with regars to the exhaust. ipd's prices (chips & exhaust) is a biotch-slap. I've had Brullen make me an exhaust in the past (3" DP for a 1.8T B5!!!) & have been very pleased. Plus the US/Canadian conversion is great!
Hmmm.. I may play with the wastegate adjustment per TravelingIncognito's post. (BTW, TI... its Silver ).
As far as suspension is concerned, I'll prolly go the springs/shocks route. Although I DO love coilovers. IMHO, they were a sound investment for my Passat. Anyone know a source for the Ohlins?
Although I really like the factory 16's (not sure of the name - it's a 5-spoke with lil "daggers" in the spokes), I'm not in love with them. Admittedly, I like the magnesium color. However, I want soemthing lighter & a lil bigger (17" most likely). Volk TE37's are great but they too are a fortune. I'm thinking SSR Comps or OZ Supperleggeras (assumming they make a proper fitment). Why shouldn't I go wider than 7.5? I really want a deeper-dish wheel as well. Would I need to roll/cut the fenders for anything wider than 7.5"?
As far as body cladding, I was never one for too many exterior body mods. I prefer very sublte aggressiveness.
Anyways, thanks for all the great replies!!!! Keep 'em coming fellas!

Not really THAT deep of dish, but a good polish lip would look very classy. They do have the gun powder color that you are looking for. A friend of mine with S4 has them on his Pearl White S4....looks astouning. He's on SS, too...just doesn't contribute all that often.
TE37 is out...and it's pretty much a Civic kinda wheel, not going to look all that on your V70R.

Lots of pain, time, energy, and YEAH...$$MONEY$$. Lots of money to get it done right.
I would suggest you to try out all the simple bolt-ons...fairly straightforward, and less troublesome.
I don't know...I am not much of an A-Pillar pod mount person. Kinda think that's more for boyracers..or hardcore drivers that REALLY want to see everything and able to concentrate on the road. If you are really creative...think of something creative and discreet.
I think both V/S70's A Pillars end at the roof line (correct me if I'm wrong), but I couldn't afford to do that on the C70. It would just look too 'add-on' and not....'flush mount.' Just wouldn't give me that factory look.
If you don't mind sacrificing the center speaker..you can always try to make some custom pod mount there.
DOH!! Should of put everything into one post...then again, not sure if you have short attenion spin.
As for the coilover part....I've been trying to contact people at H&R (thanks to George) to work out something for my car. The person is gone on business trip, should be back around the 15th. I want to see if he can work out something for our cars. I know others like Leda and SACHS have something for our cars...but I just like the H&R name better.
Intercooler, eh? When I get to that part, I'll let you know what I find out.

How big? I like them REALLY big. And yeah..better calipers would be a plus, too.
Too bad we haven't been able to see any these can be easily tuned MY2000 V70R TUNED yet. Maybe TI can do the honor?
[This message has been edited by The_one_n_only (edited 04-03-2002).]

I'd like to see you get that 4 lug wheel on your Volvo!
One and Only Glad to help you tune a V70R...send $2000 certified funds and your ECU and I'll forward it on to ipd for a download...keep a grand for my trouble and off you go roughly 40-50 hp and nearly 100 ft/lbs the better. Or send $3000 and I'll have ipd "throw" in dual exhaust and K&N and I'll keep the grand and change for my efforts. I will post some pics when the weather clears and I can try out the new camera. You seem like a techie...maybe you can help me with the details!
quote:
Originally posted by The_one_n_only:
The wheel that I was talking about..

Hi, I don't have a V70R, and probably your 2000 R is something else. Glad you like it.
No, I don't need your help. Thanks... I've wasted too much money w/ monkeys trying to work on my car, I don't need to get ripped off again.
