I'm wondering if everybody's S40 makes this sound or if something is once again faulty in my S40. While not moving, turn the steering wheel left or right. What I hear sounds like rubber stretching.

Re: Squeeking sound when turning (MarvynDT)

You're not alone. Mine started doing this about 5000 miles ago at 42k. Haven't had time to take it in yet.

I presume you aren't talking about tire-to-ground movement noise?
As an aside, when & why do you turn the wheel while not moving; I never do this. Are you doing some major parallel parking?

No, its not the tire to ground movement noise as it happens on any type of surface. It doesn't necessarily need to be zero movement either. Simple things, backing out of a driveway at an angle, parallel parking, etc.
I guess if the majority isn't experiencing this, then its not a normal thing. Re: Squeeking sound when turning (MarvynDT)

My wife just called me on this subject, she was breaking and turning sharply into the car wash and she said that the noise was horrible. It was a combination between squeaking and moaning. Anyone got a clue on this one..???

I have what I call a 'creaking' noise, almost like tightening a spring or something, while steering in slow speed, parking situations. I am going to have it looked at again at my 22,500 service.

My ABS kicks in all the time when I break hard and turn into a driveway, especially when it's a little wet outside. And for someone who's never experienced the ABS kicking in, it's a harsh sounding event.

This is kind of like when we had the barking dog problem in our cars. But yeah, the spring tensioning sound is pretty close to what I get. Sounds like it's coming from the steering column area. When you get it checked out please post back, as I'm out of waranty, so I'm weary of taking it in.

Re: (slo-vo)

anybody got and update on this problem?
I started to have that squeeking noise coming from steering wheel when turn either stopped or low speed .....!and after 2 or 3 weeks it's more noticeable.
it's funny that my wife's car (mazda 3s) had same problem. They replace a rubber piece from suspension on both sides (top of struts towers)and noise it's gone.

Can't see what kind of car you have, i.e., AWD? My AWD makes this noise from new. And I think in the review of the S40 in one of the car magazines they noticed it as well (which was mentioned in this forum). I don't worry about it since it was present from when I got the car. It is only present at turning out of the garage type speeds for me.

As I said before my wife's car had similar noise on her mazda 3s and they corrected.

For those interested, my stealership said that its the PS pump that is creating the noice and that it is normal.

Re: (pierola)

It sounds like one long continuous rubber squeeking sound while turning at very low speed (0-5 mph). Don't know how else to describe it.

I would wager that is the power steering pump.
It makes weird noises either if it's overloaded (dry steering) or the fluid level is low.

It's not a whining sound, like a power steering pump, it's more of a 'moan', growl, creeking, etc.
I also hear it from outside the car when my wife backs out of the driveway.
I made my 22,500 appt today and will have it checked. I had it checked 15,000 miles ago but it 'couldn't be reproduced'.
Re: (bpwrightwv)

I left my car yesterday for sss problem and also mentioned that squeaking sound. They gonna check it. They gave me a s40 loaner car with 500 miles on it. The brand new car has same noise but a lot less noticeable. So maybe as somebody mentioned here in this post, that noise is pretty normal nothing wrong with the car. Let's see what they say.

I had the same problem, took about 6 months to find out what the reason was. finally they changed some elastic trigonal parts that are on the top of the struts either side. Noise stopped ever since. Anyway, it has nothing to do with safety and performance.
