With the deluge of rain NJ experienced yesterday, I was treated to an eardrum overload when my car was screaming from the resonator touching the driveshaft. I felt like Capt. Kirk..."Must...stop...noise!". The squeal was f'n LOUD. This has never happened before, and it is quite jarring.
Fortunately, I happened to be driving to Smythe Volvo in Summit for repair of a clicking noise in the front left corner. That was attributed to the axle spline, which was cleaned and secured with a metal adhesive as a repair. I asked, and they treated both axles as a preventative measure.
The service writer looked up the TNN re: the squeal, and the doc stated this can happen to other models, but not the R??? Strange. So they refit the exhaust, but I am stopping by an exhaust shop to perform the JRL mod shortly. Never want to experience that sound again.
best- Scott

I saw the doc myself, so I can't blame the techs. Stated in bold letters "NOT R".

Good to know. I did not look at the date of publication: they're probably looking at something old...

Re: SQUEAL!!!! (Lightspeed)

There may be some confusion here. It is the remedy (an additional bracket) that orignally was for all cars, and then then was modified to exclude R's. It sounds like that may have again be modified to include R's which would now be a third version, or second revision.
It was not an issue that R's do not have the problem, they certainly do. The fix after the bracket was excluded was to just "adjust " the exhaust system. If you gain any significant clearance in this manner you basically have lowered the exhaust which already is the lowest point on the car.
If you do get the bracket, it will remedy the problem, but it too impairs ground clearance, which was why the R was excluded in the first revision.
Bottom line is Volvo is not going to fix this problem, just pull the resonator. It fixes the problem, and it fixes it for Volvo too since they can say the exhaust system is modifed and they do not have to touch it.

I had this fix done twice on my car (once by previous owner which I did not know so I got charged for the second time....you think they could have told me the &^&*^^%&^*-holes!).
Neither fix worked.
JRL to the rescue!

There is a charge now for Volvo engineers not understanding coefficients of expansion and/or the environment in which the vehicle will subjected?
It is difficult to imagine how they could make this the customers responsibilty, and charge for it in view of the TNN and it's sequel (s)!
I am trying to restrain from being overly vitriolic, (I have exceeded my limit this week) but that is absurd!

It had, in that the new bracket bolt was actually also rubbing the driveshaft (confirmed when I saw it on the lift). Since they "had no record" of where it was done in the first place, and they did not do the original fix, they claimed that they had to charge to do it again correctly. I was friggin apes**t, since they didn't have the courtesy to tell me and I picked it up after 5 when the SM was gone and there was only a desk jockey there.
In any event, whatever they did that time didn't work either. The resonator came off. No more problems (and we have had SOME rain to prove it!)

Re: SQUEAL!!!! (needsdecaf)

I didn't realize that if a TNN was done improperly by one dealer, and not detected by the customer, that the future remedy for the TNN at a different dealer becomes the responsibility of the customer!
Trust me I too have reached a point in my Volvo ownership where at times it is easier to just take care of it myself as opposed to deal with situations such as you experienced.
I do know that it let's down the owner community at large because it just makes these dealers that practice this type of nonsense all the bolder.
In this case there is no suitable Volvo remedy anyway so clearly you did the right thing.

Re: SQUEAL!!!! (rogersampson)

what new TNN is everyone talking about? I have also viewed 25-21 and it did read that it excluded the R line. Just curious, I did have the exhaust adjusted like others here but I would prefer the bracket instead. Does anyone know the actual number.

Re: SQUEAL!!!! (pizzapizza)

Revisions keep the same number. I have only seen the original and the one that later excluded the R.
I am not sue I would be too quick to put on the bracket, (if the R were suddenly included in yet another revised TNN) because it has the potential of forcing the exhaust system up into the driveshaft, like the other menacing strap that most remove.

I agree rogersampson, I believe that the bracket DOES exclude the R and thats okay from what it sounds like I would rather not have it.
