Well, after waiting for quite a few months and using up all of my extra "lunch money", I finally ordered and installed iPd's sport exhaust on my beloved V70! Scott (at iPd) was kind enough to make it fit in my budget while one of our techs was kind enough to donate his time and install it for me.
The exhaust tip is different, it is not round like the S60's or those from previous S/C/V70s are. It has a pointed edge to it and not huge in size. The pipes are about 2 3/4" wide, the whole piece was solid. Many of our techs came over to see it being installed and were commenting favorably as to how "precisely" the system seemed to fit under the car.
Once it was installed, certain adjustments were needed in order to make sure the exhaust tip was properly aligned. We banged (well, kind of) here and there and the best we could do was to make it straight but it was only 1/16" away from the bottom of the rear bumper! Anyway, I started it right up waiting in fear for a loud and booming noise....as the RPM went from 0 to about 1500 before settling down to about 650 (normal idle) it did kind of boom but not loud...just very sweet!!! I was all smiles! I was inside the car, it being all the way up on the lift while he was checking for exhaust leaks (none were found)...At idle the spor exhaust was slightly (and I emphasize slightly) louder than with the stock exhaust...I was yelling at him "Come on, lower the damn lift, I need to go on the road!"...So, here comes down the lift, removed the bars, put it in reverse, slowly getting out of the garage and going toward the exit of the lot. About 6 techs were out expecting me to do a burnout but I was not going to indulge them. As I am standing at the exit of our lot, ready to make a right, here comes a Corvette (about 30 meters away) coming fairly slowly...I see him, he sees me and he just accelerates slightly...I am thinking "you know what? Here is a chance to see what my car will do plus give the guys a show"! I turn and STC was not nearly enough to keep the right front tire from spinning wildly, the Corvette is right on my butt by now and then I shift into 2nd gear and I was (as usual) plastered against my seat, shifted into 3rd, did not even look to see how fast I was going because I was looking forward to the STOP sign coming up fast; checked into the rearview mirror and the Corvette was about 10 meters away from me and finally caught me.
The exhaust was not loud at all, you hear a very slight "boom" (it sounds lmost like a BMW 3-series) from 700 to 1,300 rpm and then nothing extra!!! The best compromise I could have hoped for! So, my hat is tipped, once again, to TME/iPd. They did a fantastic job with both the ECU and the sport exhaust! Even my super noise-sensitive wife did not mind it! And passing her "audio test" is the best endorsement!
When I returned, a couple of the guys told me how amazing the V70 looked as I pulled in front of the Corvette, heard me shifting and the car "shot forward like a slingshot" (this was from a guy who is a perennial Mustang fanatic and scoffs at anything less then a 350 cu. in. V8)...Well, it felt like it.
Is the car any faster? I am not sure (even though TME claims that it does add abour 12HP and that many foot-pounds of torque) but it does feel like it is slightly faster at top end. Oh, one more thing. Before the exhaust, when I was accelerating while in 3rd or 4th gear, I did feel a bit of pulsation (not STC-related) which I attributed to the way the ECU upgrade was configured. Now, it is gone! I guess the free flow of the exhaust did eliminate that...who knows?
The only "problem" so far is that the part of the bumper that is almost touhing the exhaust tip has melted a bit... Hehehe! So, I will make some more adjustments tomorrow and shave the melted part (very small, can't see it unless you crawl under) off.
Next, perhaps a BOV installation, the V70R (MY2000) turbocharger and HID lights (in that order of importance)...The pace of upgrade will depend on the state of the economy as I have to keep enriching my son's college fund first!
But I am in love with my car even more now. I have not listened to the stereo for three days now...just enjoying the other music!!!
Yannis

That's a GREAT story, Yannis!!! I'd love to have seen the look on the Corvette driver's face... I guess the melting bumper is a bit of a bummer, though, huh?
Soooo, any pics yet?! We're waiting...

Hey Yannis, that's great. Sounds like it's about the same sound result as the system we put on the 850R.
As per our conversation, don't worry, I haven't forgotten. I'm due to call both contacts today and will see what we can do.

So it's not too obnoxious. Man, that's my main beef with pretty much any aftermarket exhaust. I've been thinking of investing in upping hp in my XC. Sounds like the chip is the way to go.

Hey, congrats Yannis! Surprised the sound is deeper and guttier with the new sport exhaust! My meister here at the Faber Bamberg Volvo tells me the story of a V70 driver in Bayreuth, about 45 minutes from here (famous for Richard Wagner), who after getting the HEICO sport exhaust, goes out of his way every day to drive through a big underpass where he rolls all the windows down to hear his pipes talk! I'm still planning on the sport exhaust for the new D5 I get in November at the factory, and my meister says it will boost output of the turbo-diesel. Can't wait now after hearing your story! Best from Bavaria! Rick

I tried the IPD/TME dual sport exhaust on my `98 V70R AWD and decided to remove it within a few hours because of excessive cabin noise (it's not bad as long as you are outside the car). The whole experience was a nightmare--involving three seperate garages/installers and a total of 6 mechanics. We tried everthing to get the cabin noise below 98db (C weighted, slow speed digital SPL meter) under light throttle ~2300 rpm. Yes we read the instructions over and over. I won't bother to explain how difficult it is to get the dual cans to come out the bumper even as described in the instructions.
Unbeknownst to me the first pair of "expert" custom exhaust installers took a torch to the car to bend and cut pieces of the stock clamps and hangers, which resulted in a cut clamp rubbing on the driveshaft--cutting it like a lathe. A system that looks good on the rack means nothing. Exhausts get hot and move all over with all those bends and curves--believe me, it will rub and bang no matter what you do. It takes an experienced expert, and then some, to get it right.
I had my Volvo dealer repair the damage, bought a new clamshell clamp (the one that was "torched") for behind the cat., and re-installed the stock system. Wow! Those Volvo engineers know how to make a quiet performance exhaust!
There really isn't much of a power difference between the stock "R" exhaust (which is slightly larger in diameter) and the IPD/TME exhaust--we're talking about a difference of a few hp way up in the power band, and who drives up there anyway? How long can you drive 166+ mph in the US? And why would you want to?
Mostly it's just for looks and lots of annoying noise.
I have photos of the two systems I can email. Don't know how to post them here.
Grecian's 2nd gen. V70 has a different exhaust system--I'm guessing TME gave it an entirely different tuning or he would have said something. It's single pipe, right Grecian? Does it have a resonator or is it just one, in-line muffler?
The system IPD sells for the 1st gen. V70 AWD cars (dual sport exhaust for the AWD, the XC, and the R)is not suitable for families and mature Volvo owners, and absolutely unbearable on trips longer than 30 min. Unfortunately I was unable to get it removed before a planned 4 hr trip to the shore and back--the wife and kids couldn't take it and rented a car for the trip home. I had it removed the very next day.
If you are a young person the noise of the dual sport system will likely get the attention you crave, but the typical Volvo owner knows where the front of his hat goes.
If you're game to try an aftermarket exhaust for your Volvo, make darn sure you keep the stock system--don't destroy it during removal.
