spoiler light stays on, V70R

I've noticed the past few weeks that often times when I turn the car off, the red light in the spoiler of my V70 R stays on. Sometimes if I go back in the car and step on the brake it goes off. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes if I turn the lights on and off, it goes off. Sometimes when I remove the key it goes off, but not always. Mystery. Any thoughts? oclv

Have you checked the wiring harness at tailgate hinge, maybe the insulation is cracked and its shorting to a wire that is always hot.

I agree with VLVMAN, that this almost has to be the spoiler light wiring coming into contact with a wire that is always hot.

The brake lights in these cars are always active, the key does not need to be on for them to work. I do not suspect the brake switch, if the other brake lights do not come on with the spoiler light.

Remember too that the spoiler light is ONLY a brake light, there is no tail light function.

Bottom line, check the wiring going into the tailgate.

There is also a relay in the REM for the 3rd brake light which could be stuck on. The exact one escapes me as I only have a wiring diagram for S60R's and Michell On Demand sucks balls but its a little cheapy relay.
Maybe someone else can pull the wiring book for a V70R and give you the relay location number...ArthurC might have the book.

I am about to have my 45,000 miles service done. I'll have them take a look at it. I'll report back in a couple weeks. oclv

Check the associated wires on the REM

I was not aware there is a relay used, but that sounds more likely than a wiring issue. Stuck "ON" or closed is an odd failure mode, for a relay that is handling low current, (the spoiler is an LED array, I believe). Is this relay also used to provide power to a trailer connection?

You haven't been around Volvo's too long if you think failed closed is odd.

If Mitchell On Demand didn't screw up every wiring diagram by resigning it on their own, I could easily locate which relay to check. Mitchell however doesn't label anything right and their search function is so bad it would take less time to take the entire car apart than to try and search for a location of something.

It may also matter if its an '04 vs '05- The REM was redesigned for '05 up I believe...or was it the CEM? But its one of those little black relays in the REM.

45K?..... UNDER WARRANTY
Don't worry about it, just monitor it and make sure it's OFF when you leave the car.
