So, looking at the kit from viva

it sayis the slave+t.o.b. is included. Just wondering how's the quality.

Anybody w/ a spec clutch kit had a slave failure yet?

Also, any suggestions on what stage I should go with?

Cant comment on the quality but I remember reading that stage 3 was the way to go. For some reason its more streetable than the stage 2?

I don't believe that SPEC offers their own slave/TOB. When I sent them an e-mail asking that very question, I never heard back from them, so I assumed the answer was NO.

I have maybe 15000 miles on a spec 2+ no problems yet, and the kit does come with a slave cylinder

Do you recall if this was an improved/modified slave/TBO, or was it just another Volvo part, (made by FTE)?

Since the failure point is the slave/TBO, I am much more interested in an improved one as opposed to the disc/pressure plate, which in my case was a little over half worn at 125K miles.

I really don't know that answer to that, sorry, I am sure that the guys at SPEC could tell you

This is wrong. SPEC lists the slave and throwout bearing as included but does not include them for our cars, and simply says "oops, not for your model" when you call them on it.

This makes more sense to me. I did not think SPEC was in the hydraulics business, which you would need to be for Volvo slave/TOB. No wonder they just ignored my e-mail inquiry.

I can well imagine that Viva may include an OEM one with their SPEC kit however, because it is just good practice to replace while doing the job.

My Spec 2+ did not come with the slave. Or alignment tool, for that matter. Spec lists it as included - unless you call them and then they say no. Perhaps Viva includes one, as rogersampson said.
BTW - no problems, I like it a lot after 10k miles. Still not so thrilled about using the Volvo slave cyl. again, however

The slave cylinder issue may have been put to bed, finally. Just make sure you receive a torque limiting valve with your (OEM) slave cylinder. See the "Ask VCNA" thread.

I bought SPEC 3+ clutch from VIVA couple of month ago and it came without any extras (tool or slave or anything else). Just the clutch itself. Haven't installed it yet, so can't answer questions about drivability.

Hmmm.. must be beacuse I bought the regular (non "R") S60 clutch kit from Spec directly but it did come with the clutch, pressure plate, insrtall tool and slave cylinder

Really? Because my II+ came without them and they said they didn't make them for our cars. Time to get back on the horn with them, I guess.

Yes I read that post, but do not understand how a "torque limiting valve" solves the leaking piston seal.

By that description, it is a hydraulic dashpot to slow the rate of clutch engagement, certainly not anything you want on a performance car. It could reduce the punishment and shock to the driveline, so I understand why Volvo would implement it. I just do not see how it could possibly resolve the piston seal issue, (at least that is where my slave failed).

I was actually about to create a thread called "What makes slave cylinders fail?"

is it:
-engine acceleration when the clutch is not fully depressed
-repeated actuation (stop/go)
-clutch drops
-towing
-something else?

I have stage 3, and it's been working perfectly. No problems in slow city traffic, you can slip it like original clutch, not so easy though.
Stage 3 handles the big torque easily. Stock clutch gave up immediately after engine reprogramming.

Stage 4 might be too harsh for normal traffic use.

What about the install....
I was reading the old school vadis manual, it lists you need pressure plate compression tool, centering tool, and some other counter...?(forget exact name) to hold the automatic adjustment in place. Does the same apply to spec clutch kit?

BTW, if anybody has good pointers about the whole install process, I'll really appreciate it.

Having the clutch fully depressed and revving the engine is not great for the Throw Out Bearing, since it turns at crankshaft speed, and is in play anytime the pedal is at any position other than fully engaged, (clutch pedal released). Put the engine in neutral if you are revving the engine. This would be a much better measure than miles driven. Resting your foot on the clutch is bad news for the Throw Out Bearing, and since this is an integrated slave and TOB, than some may consider this a "slave failure". Actually the TOB detaches from the slave with one circlip. It is sold as an integrated unit, and with the high falure rates and difficult access, I would always replace both. My TOB, with 125K miles, was fine, only the slave cylinder failed. My contention is that there is virtually nothing the operator can do to "make" a slave cylinder fail. Certainly that is not true with any of the friction surface components, or even the TOB, which can fail due to abuse.
