Spare Tire for Sport Package

Hello all,

I'm sure this has been discussed before, can someone tell me why Volvo did not include a spare tire for the S80s equipped with the Sport Package? Any reason why the stock S80 spare tire should not be used?

My 07 has the temporary spare in lieu of the air pump. Just order one from the parts department. You will have to take out the compressor to fit the tire in the wheel well.

What? I have the sport pack and I have a spare, but no air pump.

I have the sport package and a small spare as well.

The 07 V8's only came with the air pump. When I purchased my car I had the dealer order a temp. spare.

Ahh. I have a 3.2, so that's probably why I have one.

If you only had an air pump, was there just a cavity under the floor of the trunk, or was it dressed out differently?

The trunk cavity is the same -- all Volvo did was put in a piece of styrofoam about the same size of a spare with the compressor pump in it. I removed it and replaced it with a factory spare and everything fits fine in the cavity.

Interesting that for a car that retailed for $50K + when new, you have to buy the spare tire on your own.

Mine had the air pump, which has been VERY useful on several vehicles AND a spare (yes, I cannibalized a lot of stuff from my car).....

Keep in mind that regardless of how new your Volvo is compared to older ones, any deviation from the rolling diameter size of the tires on any Volvo WILL cause damage to AWD components.

Installing the pump was an incentive to get the owners to keep the OE tire/wheel combo on temporarily until the tire could be replaced. I think it was Volvo's way of self-insuring against paying for failed AWD components under warranty.

I think that with Haldex we are OK using a mini-spare or wrong-size tire. From the Haldex North America website (http://www.haldex.com/en/North-America/Applications-Products/Product-categories/AWD/Product-Information/):

"Enhanced Vehicle Driving Comfort and Transparency
No wind-up during tight cornering and parking. Optimal traction during acceleration. No functional problems with tyres having uneven wear, pressure or size (minispare). Possible to tow vehicle with one axle lifted. Transparent actuation."

Anybody know what versions of Haldex I have on my 2005 and 2009 Volvos? Gen III/IV?

The current S80 and V70 use the Haldex 3. Your 05 uses Haldex 2 as does the XC90. Only the XC60 uses Haldex 4.

I don't buy that. Plenty of R and SOME V70AWD, S60AWD, XC70, and XC90 experiences debunk that statement.
Re: Spare Tire for Sport Package (napster)

Thanks Napster.
Re: Spare Tire for Sport Package (njb8199)

Then our "Temporary Spare" tire should be labeled "Really Temporary Spare"! For those of us who have one, anyway.
Re: Spare Tire for Sport Package (arporro)

Reason spare was left out of MY07 S80 V8s is because that few extra pounds pushed the car into the next emissions weight class, depressing fuel economy to the point that the car would have received the dreaded "gas guzzler" designation and tax. MY08 and later S80 V8s calibration was further optimized such that the spare could be added in without fuel economy dipping into gas guzzler territory. Thus the spare became standard again.

Regarding size, temporary spare does not necessarily mean small in diameter. Temporary spares in Volvos are usually very close to the oem tire diameter, not just to preserve the haldex unit but to provide predictable handling as well.
