So I just replaced the Continentals on my 2017 XC90 with Pirelli Scorpion Verde plus 2’s. The Pirelli’s are slightly noisier than the Continentals, but the real problem is a horrible harmonic whining noise at specific speeds that started immediately after the tire change. It sounds like I am being followed by an airplane with a propeller. It happens slightly at 45mph, gets better and then comes on strong at precisely 60mph, then gets better and returns at exactly 67mph. Above 67mph they are a little noisy but not nearly the same as 60mph and 67mph. The sound is not affected by turning. It may be slightly more pronounced on smoother roads but I’m not sure. Any suggestions? Has anyone experienced anything like this? Thanks in advance.

I had the verdes that lasted about 36k miles before I switched to Michelins and the verdes were definitely noisier but I did not experience specifically what you're describing. There was a few times I felt like I was hearing that propeller sound but it went away after a few secs so I thought it was more related to the road surface I was on. How many miles have you put on it?

I did the opposite, got rid of the lousy OEM Pirellis for some Continental LX25's. So much smoother and complaint on road surfaces. I don't have the 4C suspension and my 2018 rides like my old 95 Camaro with a live axle and dances over freeway expansion joints. That's one of my biggest gripes is the harshness of the suspension for the 18 XC90.

Could it be the wheel bearings and not tires that are making the sounds?

No, it's not the wheel bearings. It happened immediately after putting the Pirellis on and turning the wheel makes no difference. A friend of mine that has Pirellis and always drives with the radio on told me that he recently had the radio off for a short road trip and experienced the same exact thing. It is something related to the tires. Foam defect? Who knows. I'm just never buying Pirellis again. I've been driving for 30 years and they are the worst tires I've ever had.

FWIW, I bought the Pirelli Scorpion A/S Plus 3 (new tire that release in May 2021) and have been very happy with it with regards to handling and road noise. Much better than the factory equipped Verdes. I know that doesn't help OP, who already made a purchase.

On our MY19T8i we have Pirelli Scorpion Verde summer tires 275/35R22 and Pirelli Scorpion Verde winter tires 265/35R22, both with the "PNCS" noise cancelling foam. Thanks to New England pothells and nails I've gone through 10(?) different replacements, all the same tire, and have never encountered strange propeller sounds. In fact, the ride is pretty darn quiet (even with 22" rims!) so I've been a happy Pirelli customer.

As a means of comparison, I've been riding on the Vredestein Quatrac Pros on my Inscription with the 21" 10-spoke wheels and air suspension for the last nearly 20K miles. Probably the best tire I've ever used. Quiet, they're wearing VERY well, very grippy in the wet, satisfactory in the snow. Since I bought this vehicle, I haven't had to put winter tires on because of how good these tires are.

These were my first choice when I need replacement. Thanks for reporting. So far tread noise and cabin sound proofing are the one thing I am finding really subpar on the XC90 and am hoping swapping these tires will help.

I had scorpions on my X5 and hated them— they were loud at all speeds, especially above 75-80 where they would really roar, but I never heard them cause a resonance-style noise like you’re describing. My biggest complaint besides the noise was they never felt good in the rain and slipped all over the place well before the tread was gone.

It was a relief when they finally ran out of tread and I put Michelins on instead (well, at least it was for the 6 months before that car was totaled).

My XC90 came with Geolanders. They seem OK so far all around.
