The remote will not lock/unlock the doors and/or the car may not start if the remote battery is below a certain voltage.
If the car will not start due to a low or dead remote battery, place the remote in the center tray area, between the front seats,
to the right of the ignition switch. There are two plastic holders where the remote will be held in place.
The remote placed in this location will permit the antenna to be able to see the remote and start the car.
On the new XC40 the remote location for starting, is located in the storage tray under the arm rest.
Place the remote to the front in the storage area. The antenna icon is not easy to see.
There is a TJ about the remote battery not working below a certain battery voltage, has to be above 2.7 V to work.
The dealer will check the remote battery voltage and replace the remote battery if it is below voltage.
The above low battery is for all SPA cars 2016 and later.

The following is for 2018-2019 all models. There is a TJ for the following.
If the car does not start but it´s possible to start the car by placing the car key on back-up start antenna position in the center console,
take all remote keys and sport key to the dealer. The dealer will inspect for a stamp code on the remote circuit board.
If the remote code is 0142, all 0142 remotes are to be replace.
There is a list of sport key code numbers, if your sport key code is on the list, the sport key will be replace also.

Very helpful information, thank you for this.
Is there a way to check by yourself without a trip to the dealer ?
