Or since I'm a jobless High school student, a muffler?
So say I buy one with the correct dimensions
http://www.magnaflow.com/02pro...12267
(right?)
Can I just swap it on or what?
I love my s40 for all that is except the raspy sound...
Thanks for your patience!

Re: (ForceFed Motorsports)

I have a Magnaflow and it helped with the raspy sound. It deepens it, but doesn't make it that much louder unless you're REALLY standing on it. If you're not doing a full cat back, you might be okay, but in my case I believe I lost TOO much backpressure and might have actually LOST horsepower by putting this muffler on... If that doesn't bother you, go for it...

Shouldn't maganflow increase the flow?

You lost power with the magnaflow because the magnaflow doesnt flow for anything.
Evolve was only able to find 5hp and they designed the exhaust from scratch only for the s40 application.

You'd need to find a muffler with the right amount of backpressure for your n/a engine. With a turbo, you want as much flow as possible, but without one, some back pressure helps, but it's a bell curve-type relationship - too little or too much is bad.

So heres a thought... just putting a muffler on might lose you some power, but if you have an intake and a muffler would the intake generate more flow and thus recreating some of the lost back pressure?
Like I said, just a thought...

You need to have the exhaust flow be as smooth and constant as possible to make power. One way to do this is to choke the hell out of the engine so there is always another slug of exhaust gas to push out the last. A better way is to tune the output of the exhaust to the cars power with carefully designed resonators to make the flow as laminar as possible. (no one here is going to do that)
The best exhaust for our cars is a single exit strait through muffler. Whenever people that should have a single exhaust put on a dual they loose power. Unless the exhaust was made with careful dyno tuning.

Re: (zerocover)

I know what your saying but that also depends on the setup. With high output turbo setups the less the restriction in the exhaust the better, since it inadvertently "allows" the production of more power via your main power adder, the turbo.
But like you mentioned even the smoothness in the system is important since turbulence adds to restriction.
Its safe to say that most on the forums are buying exhaust systems for the sound rather than high performance gains. If sound and style is what people are after upgrade the muff with whatever works because unless its a tuned exhaust its not going to be very productive for anything else.

They've put a lot of time and research into these things.

Thanks guys for the comments.. really appreciate it. When it comes to exhaust and engine.. I don't know Jack about them. Since my car is NA, I will probably stick with the one pipe on one side. I just need to figure out which Magnaflow to get now. O! Do you guys know if I will have to get the exhuast shop to weld or bolt on the aftermarket exhaust?

Go on Youtube, listen to exhaust clips untill you find something you like then work with it.
I recommend dynomax stuff just because there up front with all the specs on there mufflers so the buyer can make an informed decision. Ie http://www.dynomax.com/ecat.html
If you want some power gains get a strait through, and when deciding on the muffler make sure to multiply your est hp by 2.2 to get the lowest loss free number you can run.
Should sound like this, if thats what your into, too mellow for me but not bad at all.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAZ72kGeBZ0
The singe entrance dual exhaust in 2.25" size is only good to some 130 hp. Yes even a 2.4i overwhels it. Single in single out does better, there is a reason the OEM exhaust is so large.
I'm looking into a y pipe then 2 bullet mufflers. Should sound nice!

Well I am looking for a sound that is maybe close to the 350z or G35? and maybe something that is comfortable during long distance driving and waiting in traffic.
